My 718 Cayman GTS has arrived at the dealer, and I’m picking it up in about 10 days. As it’s going straight to a detailer, I’ve asked them not to clean it, but just keep it under cover. The dealer said they’d leave all the wrapping on, and pop a cover over it.

As I was in the area today I just popped down for a peek. The car was there and filthy (which I expected), but also not covered, no wrapping etc. Most worryingly, the wheel crests were off and there was quite a lot of rust inside. Maybe I just shouldn’t have looked, but is this normal?

Just want to canvas opinions about whether I’m just being fussy about nothing, or can rightfully feel a little annoyed...

One thing is for sure, you will NOT get the rusty bits sorted after purchase under warranty.

My caliper bolts went rusty but PGB said they were a cosmetic item and not covered, although to be fair they did offer to go halves on new front calipers.

So, if it bothers you that much REJECT the car and have them replace the rusty parts. But that's after politely pointing out the issue and asking what they intend to do about it. I suspect it'll be "they all do that sir."

That’s a non issue, if it really bothers you that much rub the rusty bits down put some paint on them.

Enjoy your new car.

It’s not that it bothers me that much, I just wanted to find out whether it’s a problem. I realise all these cars are just lumps of metal being shipped around and will always look filthy until they are prepped for handover, but I wanted to see if this is normal practice (I just thought it was strange my car being the only one without a cover when the dealer had specifically said he’d put one on)!

If it’s fine, it’s fine :-)

I recently had the opportunity to wander around an OPC pound and with a few exceptions there were new cars uncovered and consequently a litlle mucky ! Not a nice thing to see if you are taking delivery of a new car but inevitable as no dealer would have sufficient space to keep all new cars unde cover - as for the rust in the pictures, unprotected/unpainted areas will rust very quickly and it is common practice not to fit the Porsche wheel crests until delivery as they were previously very frequently stolen!

If it does worry you that much and your dealer gives you the brush off, go to Halfords and get some Kurust. Paint it on the offending parts. Top coat with whatever you have handy.

That's what I did with my caliper bolts and there's no sign of the rust returning after almost two years of exposure to the elements.

...but you may think "why should I" too.

You don't really want to put a cover over a dirty car, the cover will flap around in the wind and can cause scratches as it rubs the dirt across the paintwork. The inside of the cover will get dirty as well so it would need to be cleaned or thrown away before it could be used again. It would be better if the car is carefully washed then covered, but when it comes to it they are designed to be pretty waterproof so providing it doesn't get left with bird poo on the paint it should be fine.

They probably took the wrapping off because sunlight might have baked it on to the paintwork.

Presumably the car will be PDI'd before heading to the detailers, or has that already been done ??
Since all wheels are normally removed during a PDI, I would expect any decent OPC tech to give any lightly rusted parts he comes across a quick clean up at least before putting the wheels back on again.
I don't think that's too much to expect, even if they do know it's heading to a detailer.

Why do they remove the wheels as part of the PDI?

I think it's to remove suspension chocks for one thing.

My M3 was delivered with same issue. Yes, it is just cosmetic, but it’s very annoying on an expensive new car, when a visit to Halfords and a few minutes of your time is all it takes to fix.
And I’m betting this is another problem that no-ones wife’s car suffers from!

Bs about no wrap etc, something must be going on! This was my car when it turn up, check the speedo and see if anyone took a long joy ride? my car had 27, checked with others who collected the same time and the range is acceptable.

Anyway i told them not to prep it, got home and washed it myself, drove for a week then down to premium detailing UK in west london. It was amazing when i went there!

Yes, and check they have. One 718 owner (here?) had his left in situ and they caused damage. I'm also sure the loan 718 OPC Leics "unwrapped" as I waited (25 miles on the clock) had these left in place as the standard suspension was unbearably firm. I emailed them after to enquire if they'd left the blocks in and got no response. Guilty?
