In typical fashion a stone has badly cracked (in 2 places) the windscreen on the 718 I picked up less than 2 weeks ago .. The car is about 18 months old.

Through my insurance (privilage) I need to use autoglass to replace with a £75 excess. However I just spoke to them and have been told OE glass is not covered. Having looked I think the glass I have now is actually not OE either since it is branded as pilkington.

I can pay the extra (waiting for a quote on this but maybe 300 to £400+ ?) or just go with whatever they put in as standard. Is it worth paying the extra for OE? I think I will but I will then be extremely pissed off if I have to replace it again immediately. This is the second windscreen I have replaced in a couple of months as I had exactly the same thing happen in the BMW I had before! frown

Read your insurance, my company admiral has something written that cars under 3 year old we can request OEM glass. every company is different so better check your terms

Hmm, so the extra is going to be a lot I'm guessing then ..

Their policy just says "We may decide to repair your car with parts which have not been made by your car’s manufacturer but which are of a similar standard". The woman I spoke to from autoglass was adamant that OE was not covered but I haven't spoken to the insurance company about it.

That’s why always read the small print rather than just the bottom line! I use Marsh Private Clients (ex Porsche Insurance), not the cheapest but they always guarantee to use OEM parts and in the event of an accident my local Porsche Centre for repairs - which guarantees OEM parts.

Had the same conversation this morning with Autoglass via NFU insurance. The Cayenne had a large stone crack the screen so new one required. Autoglass understood immediately when I said I wanted OEM and was happy to order one from Porsche, and even got me to check the exact details imprinted on the broken screen as there are different versions (acoustic/solar/sensors etc). Also happy to do it at my OPC for my own reassurance (they’ll keep an eye on the work for me).
Hope it works out but so far so good Autoglass, and yes, my policy has a similar caveat about non standard parts.

My 2014 981 windscreen was replaced by Autoglass in Dec 2015. They asked what was written on the OE glass. It reads only "Pilkington" as does all the glass around the car. No "Porsche" no other logos.

So they replaced Pilkington with Pilkington. I asked to check the new screen at their depot (I took it in so all tools were there to do a proper job) before they fitted it. It was identical so they went ahead. Perfect job. £75 excess with SAGA.

So your glass may well be OE, it's Pilkington. Unless your other glass has something else printed on it???

Porsche dont make glass pilkington do. Pilkington is OEM as good as it gets. In all probability Autoglass will fit Pilkington for you. In reality Autoglass have more experience than anyone in fitting screens so no issue there its just making sure they use OEM glass. I had new dealer fit screen in my 981 under warranty and there are different screens depending on whether you have a camera or not.
Suggest you contact autoglass first to agree what what then they will contact insurance. Also keep note a non original screen will be a warranty issue in future if your bothered. Personally I wouldnt fit non OEM.

As an update on this - I finally have the OE glass ordered now. Cost was £216 excess instead of the usual £75 excess with my insurer. So not as bad as I was expecting.

But what did you get, Pilkington glass? If so should have just let them do it in the first place for £75 as it would be the same end result.

I am really fastidious with my cars but I really don't understand this fixation with having OE windscreen replacement espescially as it seems to lead to a much higher cost. Over the years I have had a number of windscreens replaced - including on 2 Porsches - and have never specified OE or had any problems. I don't know if they were OE or not. If people are worried about rsale value, when was the last time you looked at the windscreen/window glass to check manufacturer when looking at a used car ? The more important point is using a reputable repairer and the workmanship of the fitter. An OE replacement fitted badly would be worse than a non OE fitted well and I guess with all the additional sensors/cameras on windscreens these days the fitting should receive more focus. I have alays used Autoglass but watched the fitting closely and they have been great!

Depends on the insurer, I suppose, Admiral charged me higher excess when i requested a OE windshield.
Why did I want one? Because the one they initialy fitted didn't have the required GPS antenna.

Does it literally have "OE" printed on it? Or "Porsche", or something else?

Doe the OE "mark", whatever it is, match all of the other windows? I.e. do they all have the identical writing on them now?

Iirc that “diamond” like logo at the top of the image is the old PD (Porsche Design) logo, it used to be (or can still) be found on Porsche OE glass.

I just had a look and I can't see anything obvious. When the new glass turns up I will compare.

To answer the question on the OE mark - there isn't one. It's Pilkington glass with no P, diamond symbol or anything else.

I recently had autoglass round to work on my car. I was forced to go the autoglass route by my insurer Admiral who flat-out refised to pay for an original windscreen.

They replaced the windscreen with a 'pattern' part made by someone called FUYAO. The windscreen itself was faulty and wavy with manufacturing defects and the installation was poor as there was a huge gap across the top of the screen.

I kicked off, they came back and installed an original windscreen (Saint-Gobain Sekurit) and its been fine since.

Same as all my glass then. The new Pilkington screen matches all other glass as far as what's engraved.
