Confused.com. Select cheapest. Don't crash.

Has saved me a ton of money over "specialists", whatever the hell that means in the context of a commodity product.

Ask yourself, do you need guaranteed values and excellent customer service for something you won't actually use?
"Don't crash. Won't use"???

Who knows? If a child runs into your car door on a bicycle, a VW Beetle T-bones you from a side turning and writes your car off, a car rear-ends you, then you'll want an easy to deal with insurer. All three have happened to me over the years and Tesco (UK Insurance) who dealt with the bicycle incident were both cheap and utterly crap. I now avoid cheap insurers.

You can be the most careful driver in the world but when your car is parked and gets totalled, your careful driving is irrelevant.

Having said all that, NFU were reasonable when compared to other premium insurers.

What happened with Tesco ? I was with them when I hit a deer a few years back, causing £6k worth of damage. All fully dealer repaired with loaner within two weeks, seemed fairly painless at the time. Having no other parties involved may have helped I guess.

The problem is that cheap doesn't mean crap and expensive doesn't mean good.

For one thing you need to decide what you want to be able to get it. Do you want guaranteed value, new for old, who will fix it, loan car, etc. Do you mind exclusions for drink or drug driving? Drive other cars? Standard or modded car, track days etc.

The same rule applies with insurance as with almost everything else you can buy - “ Cheapest price is not always best value”

This is awful advice imo. I didn’t crash, but following a burglary at my home I’ve had to claim thru 3 different insurers for one stolen car and 2 sets of stolen keys. My 2 less valuable cars were on classic confused.com cheapest policies and both have been an absolute nightmare, treating me like the criminal and trying to find any reason not to pay the claim. Admiral, insurer on one of the stolen sets of keys, would only pay £150 towards a replacement key for which Porsche charge c.£1000. My GT3 insured with a specialist insurer (Lockton) has been a breeze, no quibble they take care of everything, zero excess, invoice sorted and paid by them.

Insurance covers many things beyond your control, it’s not just a case of ‘not crashing’. The amount I’ve had to pay for the keys in the admiral case meant I could’ve bought a premium policy and had money to spare - which I will be doing going forward. Whilst I hope you never have to claim, I’m sure you will bemoan your own advice if you do.

Good luck with that philosophy. Thing is the specialists are often cheaper than the dregs of the price comparison sites but you get new for old replacement in the first few years, OEM repairs, etc. Its a no brainer for higher value cars.
