Hi All, new member, just had the 20k service on my 718. So I'm told when a dealer tells you that you need new discs and pads you almost certainly don't, on the front I usually wait for the wear indicator to come on anyway (which it hasn't yet), but they tell me they need replacing. Apparently the pads have 2.5mm and the discs are on 0.5mm ? Does this sound about right to replace them ?

The other thing I couldn't believe is the dealer quote for the front discs and pads is £1000+ ! Even an independent quoted me £750 all in for genuine parts. Do it yourself, it's easy I hear you say, and at that price I'm seriously considering it. I know these are expensive cars, but for brakes that's just insane.

Have you been tracking it? Never had to replace disks that early on a road car, track yes but not road.

Had similar advice from a MINI dealer with my wife's mini.... no wear indicator showing "but they need changing sir".
She drove the car for another 5,000 miles until the wear indicator flagged up they were at the minimum - they then got changed in a week, and not at the main dealer either. Steel brakes are just that.

Dealers do like to create work for themselves!

As above, have you been tracking the car? I'm sure there will be plenty of other 981 owners on here who will have changed discs/pads but that early sounds fishy unless you have been doing some genuinely hard driving. Did you buy it new? i.e., know the history?

FWIW - I recently had pads changed at ATS for a lot less than Porsche / genuine parts too to keep the warranty. Only thing to watch out for is you might need to pay for new pad sensors as they are prone to breaking during the swap over.

Just road use! Nice to know they’re talking complete arse. The old ‘discs+pads’ ruse, I guess thats why dealers are referred to as ‘stealers’ on here.

What about the price, @ over £1k ?! Crazy. I will definitely look at ATS or similar when (if) the light comes on. Thanks all.

Yes that price sounds right for main dealer. Had to get the front discs replaced on my Cayman earlier this year and after getting a few independent quotes called a couple OPC's. Couldn't believe it. Had to double check they heard I only wanted the fronts done, not rears also.

Id never trust ats or kwik fit to work on my car . If you dont want to pay dealer prices use a good independent.
You must have known Porsches are expensive to run?

Are they using the theory that discs and pads will need replacing before the next scheduled service so it's best to get them done now so you avoid another trip to the dealer?
I would run them until the warning light comes on or before the next really long trip.
I agree with earlier post - don't use Kwikfit

Just had my 718 Cayman serviced last Monday with 20,000 on the clock, below is an extract from the health check. Not sure if this helps, they did say pads and discs should be replaced together but mine were okay.

Visual check Front Brakes - Pads 8 mm remaining
Visual check Rear Brakes - Pads 8 mm remaining


Front Brake Disc Thickness = 1.0mm before max wear
Front Brake Pads Thickness = Pads 8 mm remaining
Rear Brake Disc Thickness = 0.9mm before max wear
Rear Brake Pads Thickness = Pads 8 mm remaining

I complained that the calipers had faded and the bolts had gone rusty - they said it was due to an aggressive wheel cleaner - anyone else had this issue?

Same issue with my calipers and bolts. Never used anything but ph neutral cleaner on them.

I changed mine at 13k miles. The discs were quite badly corroded. New genuine discs, pads, dampeners, sensors, fittings kits and bolts cost me around £600 all in for parts. And I fitted them myself one sunny afternoon. It really is an easy job to do. It's literally a couple of bolts!

Buy genuine parts from somewhere like:

2.5mm of pad material isn’t exactly loads is it.

What ever you do, take it to the cheapest place you can find..... they will use high quality components and you won’t have to come back on here in a few weeks asking why your brakes are not performing so well.

Keep using them until the wear lights come on. I was told my rear tyres needed doing, they lasted another year! Although i did run them down to the legal limit.

Finally ended up taking it to a different OPC for something else- and they also checked the brakes. Here's what they found:

Front disc: 1.4mm before max wear
Front pads thickness: 8mm remaining

Now I know the policy here is not to name and shame, so I won't name names, but wtf ! Either the first are incompetent because they can't read the measurements accurately, or (imo more likely) they are on the scam. Needless to say I won't be returning to the first.
