Ok quite a rare option then as only ever seen black and white in the flesh and yellow in pictures

Sorry, completely forgot about this.
Had a great couple of hours driving both, though they were PDK which wasn't my first choice - my preference was for manual.

The 718 boxster was very nice but a bit sparse options wise. The seats, driving position and cabin all very good and I felt at home immediately. It felt familiar as I could see the similarities with my old 986, but much improved. Driving it was on another level - way sharper than my 986 and so much faster. The roads were a little damp so was cautious at first, but it just gripped relentlessly encouraging me to press on in bends and roundabouts. I guess 265mm rears help a bit there. Having said that, whilst I quite enjoyed it, I didn't feel the need to push very hard - it wasn't until much later that I realised it was 'just' very competent, but didn't move me the way it should.

The 981 on the other hand... after the 718 the interior feels a little dated - not bad by any means but the newer model is a definite step up. But... it had most of the options on my desires list, including Sport Chrono pack, PSE, xenon headlights and the obligatory heated sports plus seats. Just turning the key it just sounded right. If it'd been a manual I'd probably have signed the deal there and then. Thoroughly enjoyed every minute of the test drive, especially playing with the Sports Plus mode - for the humble 2.7, it was biblical. Nowhere near as quick as the 718, probably not very fast at all in the grand scheme of things - but fast enough to have a little fun.

Sat down with the guys from Porsche Centre to discuss how it went, and the old question 'what can we do to help you sign today' was asked. I wanted a manual and both were PDK - so there was nothing they could do. I thanked them and said if they get a similar manual to let me know.

It wasn't until later that night I realised how much I'd enjoyed driving the 981; whether despite, or possibly because of the PDK I don't know.

Anyway, long story short I now own the 981 Black Edition I tested, and thoroughly loving it. cool
Congrats on the purchase

You've got me thinking about trading in my M3 for a 2015-2016 Cayman S now... The 718 S sound doesn't appeal at all

I'll post in Readers Cars once I've had a chance to take some photos, a few here though: click.

Interesting what you say about the 718 vs 981 interiors, I didn't feel they were that different other than the vent shapes on the dash.
I don’t like the 718 vents protruding above the fascia nor do I like the return of the Sport Chrono “wart”, much prefer the flush fitting and integrated items in 981.

The sports multi function wheel on 718 a huge improvement over the hideously ugly multi function 981 wheel though.

Resurrecting this thread, I’ve been looking for a cayman S and see that 718 values are now almost the same. Anyone have any indicators of what the market is showing? Will 981 S values drop more to create a gap or will they stay strong even though 718 prices are similar? Any advice appreciated

It's very hard to second guess the market, but with a 718-6 coming next year sometime it's hard to see the F4T models doing anything other than lose value given that they're not universally loved?

It will depend on pricing of the new car, which will be expensive, and what they do with the F4T models - drop some, replace the GTS etc.

Obviously it will depend on the price etc of the 718-6, but I can see it denting the price of 981GTSs especially, but 981Ss too.

Given the price difference there will be - circa £20k to a GTS - I think 981s will hold steady. Used GT4s are circa £20k off the list price of a new one for example and they're more expensive cars.

Maybe, but, at the moment the 981GTS commands a very significant premium over a regular 981S by virtue of its kudos as the last (and many would argue best) of the mainstream 6 cylinder cars. It will lose that kudos with the arrival of the 718-6 so I'm bound to think that 981GTS and S prices will become closer.

Thanks for the replies. Yeh that’s what I’m hoping, for the 981 S values to stay steady. Anyone’s guess but was hoping for some insight if anyone thinks 981 S values were going to drop more than usual

GTS's having been dropping steadily for a while , most are well under the £50k mark. One opc had one up for £55k at the beginning, now £10k cheaper!

It's the time of year too, it happened last year. They'll pick up again in spring, as will all sports cars. The gap to an S is still constant I suspect at around £5k-£10k.
