Hi all,

I test drove a Python Green Cayman GTS 4.0 last week. I think it’s safe to say that it’s the best car I’ve ever driven (although I haven’t driven that many)!

Since selling my manual C2S 997.1 in Feb, I’ve been on the lookout for a replacement and put down a deposit on a GR Yaris thinking that I’d have more fun overall if I had a fun daily that I could use all year round. I was offered a Yaris at the end of the month and so test drove it a week or so ago. I took my wife and kids and predictably there wasn’t much room in the back. No-one particularly loved it. I couldn’t heel and toe, the piped noise wasn’t great and the seating position too high (all the common stuff). However the urgency of the engine and performance was all great but I didn’t really get to test the handling. It wasn’t the best test drive experience (my fault since it was rushed and with the whole family) whereas I took the GTS out by myself and so possibly that helped my enjoyment! Gear change, engine and seating position all massively better in my opinion.

There is a pretty decent difference in cost (30k or so). My feeling is that I would prefer to keep my up as a run around (we have a family/dog car as well) and give myself a chance of getting the GTS in say 6 months when my finances should be in a better position. The problem is I feel slightly guilty that my fun car would be something that I can’t take my 2 kids in at the same time. I thought I wanted a 993 but I test drove one and didn’t warm to it (although it was literally just up the road with the salesman with me and so not the most useful experience). I can’t get the GTS out of my head and so two questions:

1. Those with kids - do you still get to use a 2 seater with kids as they start having different interests or does it feel a bit unused at weekends?

2. Is there a 911 with back seats that can broadly compare with the experience I had with the Cayman GTS? I appreciate that they are totally different in driving feel given the engine layout but I was wondering if, for example a 997 GTS or Carrera T would give the same excitement from gearbox and engine? I haven’t driven loads of cars but I can’t just keep on test driving different ones indefinitely! Maybe it’s just the small size, mid engine layout and new feel that I liked and so I should accept no substitute...

I’m cancelling my GR Yaris order tomorrow which is focussing my mind!
4 kids. None of them wanted to be in the back of my 997.2 C4S ever. And it didn’t thrill me as a weekend car. So looked at Boxster 4.0 GTS and settled in a 981 Spyder which I love. Taking one child at a time is fine. We have other things for when more than 2 of is need to go somewhere.

Thanks Billy! That’s what I was hoping someone would say. I’d love a Spyder but I don’t think I could get one new and the 981s are getting away from me price wise. Glad to hear you are loving yours (and that you felt the same way about your 997).

Maybe it's me but when I drive my 993 with the family in, it's very different to if I'm ony own. Might as well be driving the family 4x4 tbh!

None of them are that fussed, my daughter (6) likes help washing the car and hugging it and giving it names but as for drives...not too bothered.

I actually think she'll be much more enamoured with the 981 on the way as she can sit 'in the front' which is far more exciting a prospect and as it's a much safer car I'll be happy pushing it a bit when she comes, which will induce lots of giggles. She's at the age where ferrying her around to various activities or playdates is becoming more common so a 2 seater is perfect.

Not sure how old your kid/s are but hopefully gives you some insight albeit sample of 1!

Thanks for the responses. I think my kids (5 and 6) would love it but winning my wife around to the 2 seater idea is proving trickier!

Just come out of a shocker of a Teams meeting (are there ever any good ones) and so lovely to see the dog pics, thanks. Wouldn’t get our golden retriever in there in a million years. - she won’t even jump into the back of our Passat estate!

It hasn't been problem so far with my Cayman. My children are 14 and 11 so invariably they have to be in different places at the same time so a 2 seater is not a problem - apart from arguments over which car they get to go in! Family days out and holidays etc are taken care of with my wife's car.

Sounds like some lucky bugger with a GR Yaris order is going to be happy at moving up the waiting list, my GR drives better and is more exciting at real world speeds than any Porsche I’ve test driven or owned….which includes 911s, Boxsters and Cayman on road and at the PEC.

Great to hear you love it! Who knows, I might regret it but it’s done now. Maybe I’ll see the lucky owner driving round Devon!

I’m not sure I’d class the gr a better drivers car. It’s certainly faster in the wet. But my 718 Spyder is more exciting then the Yaris. The Yaris is actually quite boring but a very nice tactile car to drive and it’s very fast down a B road. Would not change my Porsche for it though.

For me the GR falls at the same hurdle that almost every other modern car does: it's not exciting at normal speeds.

The only way to have fun in it is to drive very very fast. It might be one of the quickest point to point cars on the road, but it's not fun imo. Porsche have the same problem to some extent, but the engine and control weights at least make them somewhat satisfying when not going for it.

GR had numb steering, average gearshift and overall not much feedback. Would rather have a Fiesta ST. To get something with proper feel at all speeds you need to go older/modern classic.

Agreed. I just couldn’t bring myself to drive around in a fiesta. I don’t know why, I think it’s the more fun car, I think it’s a case of biting your nose off to spite your face

Interesting.

I have had a lot of Porsches and still own a few. The GR is an amazing breath of fresh air and for once the hype is justified. Thinking of say the NW500, I doubt there is a better car to go over the hills there.

I can get on board with that. In the wet they are really quick, well quick full stop, but certainly in the wet.

I guess 4wd, less power and more all weather tyres has something to do with it

A quick update (if anyone is interested)! The salesman from the dealership called me today to refund the deposit for the GR Yaris but I hesitated and asked for another few months to decide. He was fine with that since they were going to keep the order open anyway. The one that I could have had this month was stuck on Autotrader and snapped up very quickly (over 50 calls he said) and went up to the Midlands.

So my options are still open even though I still think the GTS is the car for me. I'll see how work/cash goes over the next few months.... I'll be happy either way.

I am in the market for a new 718 Cayman S. While waiting for a build allocation, I took GTS 4.0 manual for a drive.

Wow! What a machine?! I loved every second of a 2-hour ride; but my wife didn’t like it as a passenger, my gear changes ‘mess her hair’ with her head moving forward and back smile
The engine response and linear power output is amazing, close-gear-ratio transmission is superb, the engine whines like a (heli) turbine. The chassis and steering is incredibly precise. Awesome package.

I concluded its a perfect third car, but not a daily commuter I am looking for. The GTS 4.0 with PDK would probably be a better fit for me, but right now it’s unobtanium!

Now that looks tasty. Been wondering how the Boxster would look in green - loads of Cayman pics until now.

Model designation on door deleted and that would be close to my perfect colour spec.

Congrats

Has anyone gone full leather interior and deleted the GTS interior packages? If so, why? I’m trying to decide on sticking to the GTS internal package or be a bit different and go full leather.
