Anyone seen any 981S advertised with the exact same spec as a GTS (which I understand is possible).

Be interested what sort of price differential there is...lots I expect!
There is the odd one or two out there, there was a £10k price difference a couple of years ago.
It's interesting what a badge can do.

Badge, more power, alcantara interior, exhaust sound due to the fuelling map, the fact that it was the top of the line model, rave press reviews etc. It all added up to make a desirable car.

True, I was just surprised re. the bucket seats as comparing them to the 987R.

Like I said earlier, buckets weren't available to order for at least 6 months of production, I think it was for builds from September 2015 to the end of production in mid 2016. Another reason they weren't so popular compared the R is that the 987R was the GT4 of its day and so buckets were de rigueur. For the 981 series, the GT4 covered that base.

The 981 GTS is more of an all-rounder, and a fabulous one at that, and the 718 GTS 4.0 is much in the same vein.

Not quite true - you can't get the GTS interior or the 340bhp upgrade - but you can get the other bits including the altered bodywork. That said, the GTS actually worked out a tad cheaper than an S to a similar spec, so it would be odd to upgrade the S in that way.

I have seen an S with the altered bodywork - but it was an expensive option and introduced late in the day, so likely to be very rare. It's a mixed blessing since it reduces ground clearance - or more exactly approach angle significantly. The other bits and pieces are more common, but if you are prepared for a longish search you may find one with all of them. The S is still signficantly cheaper than a similar GTS - but that difference is bound to reduce once (and if) the GTS 4,0 starts coming onto the secondhand market - if not before.

Good to know. Always learning here.

The only mystery is that the test car featured in the PH and EVO tests has a painted front air splitter. That doesn't appear anywhere as an option.
i agree that that painted splitter definitely adds interest to what is otherwise a very bland front bumper. worth asking the OPC if that can be optioned somehow and why some press cars have it. failing that maybe it can be wrapped?
OK, I've got to the bottom of this. Let's say you buy a base model Cayman, or indeed and S or a T. You can have as an exterior option, Sport Design Package, for a cool £1,767.00, a different nose cone, WITH the blade splitter, in body colour. Looks great. If you then tick 'Rear Side Intakes Painted' you can have that for £332.00. Then your base Cayman looks evil

If however you buy a GTS, you get the blade splitter nose cone thrown in, but it's finished gloss black. Neither 'Sport Design Package' nor Rear Side Intakes Painted' are options on the GTS, which is a pity.

I think that a trip to the wrappers may be on the cards, though I hate modifying a new car. I wish I understood the logic of some Of Porsche's decisions. The GTS needs both of those items, and you can have them on ALL the less expensive models.

I've got a 981S with more options than most GTS cars, apart from the GTS specific cosmetics, and it looks like it's worth about £10K less than the lower end of the GTS asking price range.

And I guess the majority of us wouldn't notice the difference to drive...... !

I'd hang on to it then. Sanity will eventually return.

I think you’ll find the 4.0 has matte black bits not gloss *clears adenoids*

I see Germany are putting factories workers on reduced hours, that is bound to affect deliveries of cars?

Difficult to know, sales were already slow in the sector and virus issues are bound to lead to some cancellations.

I had the same setup with my 981 S. It's the smart buy in the 981 range!

Power difference was not noticeable and you could copy the external bumper styling for £2k. Leaving you £8k for running costs..

They're only found in earlier cars though, before the GTS was launched for obvious reasons.

I thought the Sport Design kit came along after the GTS. When was your car registered?

I fear you are right, it will be moulded plastic, and that won't paint or wrap.

The cosmetic differences don't interest me and it seems that there are no mechanical changes, other than the small power increase. I see no benefit in spending the £10K+ difference but clearly others do. I think I'd rather spend the difference on a nice 986 Boxster S.

After lots of umming and arring I decided to spec the Carbon full buckets after all.

Not sure what my rationale was in the end, you can so overthink these things. I think I just like them.
