He really got under the skin of the car there... What a dreadful review! Danpunch said:

The review is good. It is honest and I suspect it is not what your nor anyone wants to hear, but the upshot of the review is, at 50mph in 1st gear, it is a 2 gear car..... and a significant % of drives will remain in 1st gear. To me, that is rubbish, not the review. julian718 said:

It's yet another easy bandwagon to jump on, as for some reason some people can't drive properly and don't like using first gear.

Firstly no one is going to be driving around everywhere in 1st gear .. Secondly - what do you think the top speed is in 3rd gear in a car with PDK? It's certainly not less than 70mph. So using your logic a PDK equipped car is a "2 gear car" as well ..Schmed said:
He's certainly not the best reviewer, but let's face it he's not saying anything that's not been said before.

I think most people like using 1st, just not having to stay in it 90% of the time. Personally I think the high gearing comments are a load of nonsense, yet more 'lazy' journalism. It's yet another easy bandwagon to jump on, as for some reason some people can't drive properly and don't like using first gear.

Quite. There's some complete nonsense talked about gearing on these cars. For decades 4 gears was the norm in a manual, then 5, now 6 and in some cases 7. In a modern manual many drivers are likely to be skipping intermediate gears in normal driving. If you don't like one of the gears just use a different one!

What if you don't like any of them? I'm only being slightly facetious here. In the manual 1st is too low as a B road gear, second is bit too high for briskly overtaking cars toodling around 40 mph, 3rd only really gets going beyond the legal limit etc. Not one of the lower ratios is where I would like it to be. The extra midrange torque of the turbo cars mitigates this somewhat. The PDK cars are better - 70 in second 100 in third but still a bit long with the torque curve of the NA engines.
