That’s got to be one of the saddest things I’ve ever read on here.

I lurked on this forum for a long time before I registered and one thing I learnt is that Julian987r is either on a permanent wind up or he’s simply an imbecile.

Either way, he’s best ignored.

What’s availability like for the GTS 4.0? As far as I’m aware it’s not a limited run, so in theory you can walk in or call to place an order. Is that right?
Yes, anyone can walk in and order and the requirement is a £3k deposit to secure your order.

Boxster is quoted at 18+ months, very possible you’ll never get one as the 718 gets replaced by a new model. Cayman is easier to come by (<12 months), Porsche actually just released a large number of build allocations for Q4 so the lead time for this is coming down. I think the Cayman and Boxster are built at different factories which explains the inability to balance production.

I've got a B25 which is basically a Boxster 4.0 GTS in drag. I picked it up at the end of October last year and have just passed 5k miles on the odometer. We're off to Italy in it next month which will probably put another 3-4k miles on it. The last thing I'm worried about is that the miles I'm enjoying in it might be damaging it's resale value. I bought it to enjoy it and that's exactly what I'm going to do.

I think that people who focus on monetary values over the simple pleasure of driving the cars they've probably worked hard to acquire are likely missing out a great deal on life. As my dad used to say "you're a long time dead so make the most of the time you've got and if you die a pauper you'll have probably enjoyed life a lot more than most".

Awesome analogy… that put a grin on my face.

Personally I would prefer mr. Goldfinger’s Boxter 😎

The Boxster as a daily and the GT4 for track days and road trips
I am lucky enough to own a 981 gt4 and face a 992 Carrera and 992 Carrera 2 GTS or order
But I think the perfect combo could be Base Carrera plus
gt4
That you get an awesome road / GT car and a very good weekend track day car ( for my ability this is perfect timing n a track ) and

For those of us peasants that can’t afford a GT4 AND a 4.0 Boxster, I think my upcoming Cayman GTS will do a nice job of being a one car solution biggrin

Further to Voodoo’s comment, my days of garaging/polishing and not using my cars - due to fear of wear/tear and value loss etc - are over. All I was doing was benefitting the next owner.

This one will get used and I won’t be watching the miles tick over. Anyway , It’s not the distance travelled, it’s the journey that matters, right?

Yep, 100% that user is a total troll.
Kind of reminds me of another banned troll 911R.. they always had nothing but negativity and opinionated views to share.
Always banging on about how the 987R was the best car Porsche have made and will ever make.. hmm are they connected? Lol

Well i apologised for how I phrased what i said. the sentiment came across wrong for which i sincerely apologise about.

i am not a troll. I like to think I start some threads that get traction and debate and share interesting Porsche related links, news, links to further support threads and cars for sale.

I harped on about the R as, having just bought it, I felt like there wasn't enough awareness of just how much bang for buck you get by comparison to its 911 brother and everyone who's just bought their Porsche are excited and want to share their enthusiasm not matter what the model.

I can't seem to win. Seems unless one agrees with everything everyone says then one is not accepted. I don't call people names, unlike many others.

Has anyone done a factory tour? I see that they are back up and running, and was at the museum this week but couldn’t wangle a last minute tour. My car goes down the line mid September so would be great to visit close to then, even if I don’t see it

Incidentally a trip back up the autobahn and I saw a Cayman GTS 4.0 come past at probably 150mph+. Sounded and looked amazing!

Julian, you did fine, and I have never thought of you as a troll. Acerbic wit occasionally gets misinterpreted, and I guess a few of us have some guilt thrust upon us by significant others for Porsche ownership. (Not necessarily including me wink) Any good forum needs someone to explore sore points occasionally, so for me, you are a highly valued member. At very worst you made me compare running costs of my base 718s vs. my GT4. It was an eye opener!

Now given all that, can someone please talk me out out of ordering a Cayman GTS 4.0!

beerthumbup thank you Liam that is very nice of you to say.

Not to talk you out of the GTS but if i was considering a new Cayman i'd be wondering if, considering the next iteration is the Electric version then, before the Cayman ICE Age comes to a close, would there not be any special editions or final updates to the range as a whole? It can't just be the Gt4RS as the swan-song can it?

Well... Last year's new delivery was, for me, my second (and very divisive) 2.0 turbo base 718 Cayman. If I'm honest, just about the best road car ever made from my perspective. While the 981 GT4 is better in some ways, if I could own only one of them as a daily drive, the 781 base Cayman is probably the winner. It is an absolutely sublime road car in every way, at least for me.

I'm sort of hoping that in 5 years' time I'll be keeping the GT4, and chopping the 718 in for the electric version, because it will definitely be good. If I end up with what I already have I won't be too sore about it. As "summer" and "winter" daily drives I know I live a dream for many people.

GT4RS is an unachievable dream for me, and probably still inaccessible once we figure out what they might be worth in the real world. North of what anyone pays new by miles, I am sure. GTS 4.0 might be the genuine swan-song of what can be ordered by everyday punters, and it neatly crosses over the two that I currently enjoy. If I owned no Porsches right now, and had to choose, I'd order a 4.0 GTS before considering what they might come up with next.

I had a 2.0 Boxster before the 4.0 I've got now and for everyday use the 2.0 is really hard to beat. Mine certainly had enough poke to keep me happy on public roads and would do circa 40MPG on a steady run. I also liked the noise it made out the back end so that's pretty much all the boxes ticked.

The 4.0 is absolutely brilliant and I'm glad I took the opportunity to get one before they stop making them. It does everything the 2.0 does but better, except fuel economy but for this car that is way down on the list of priorities. The only disappointments I've got, you can't really exploit it's potential much on today's busy roads and the PPF induced muted exhaust, my wife's 981 Cayman sounds so much better with PSE switched on.

If I had 2 identical Boxsters to choose from as my last ever ICE sports car but 1 with the 2.0 and 1 with the 4.0 I'd find it really difficult to decide which one to pick. Dare I say it might just come down to saving around £16K by getting the 2.0 but even then I think at some point I'd have some regret at not getting the 4.0.

Do you have any facts? Selling my early 2018 2.5 GTS to the OPC (because I've ordered a 4.0) with 15,000m for £15k below what I paid for it new. The math doesn't add up, 4 ½ years of age depreciation and 15K miles doesn't equal £200 per 100 miles. Porches are probably one of the manufacturers with the lowest depreciation for regular cars and they should just be enjoyed.

Just enjoy driving it, if your worried about the depreciation put your money in a pension!

BTW good to have people with alternate opinions, as long is at remains respectful. What's the point of a forum if everyone agrees, it is important to be exposed alternate views and posters should agree or disagree without name calling.

I suppose I got a bit miffed with seeing your (in my opinion) unhelpful comments across the site where people are genuinely asking for advice.

Calling you a troll was a bit extreme and uncalled for so for that I apologise.

I should just read your comments with a pinch of salt and stick to the ethos that everyone is entitled to their opinion.

That's a mind-bendingly negative outlook... seemingly dressed as objective

In a practical sense I'm not sure that logic applies to Porsche cars at the moment, I can't find a second-hand 4.0 718 much below list, let alone one without mileage on the clock (and don't quote the yellow one with a red interior as an example... biggrin). Moreover, I’m sorry to say this (and be that person), but if you cant afford to lose 20-25% on a 75k car over 24 months and 20k miles, buy a cheaper car.

In an emotional sense, the car (ownership) is not the objective, it's the opportunities and the experiences it facilitates, they're the real objective. Buy it, use it.

couldn't agree more! - I'll never buy a new car that will plummet like a stone but if I've bought a car thats relatively depreciation free / a low depreciator - i wont care to stick 50k miles on it. I always laugh at people who buy aston / ferrari / porsche to own the car for 2 years having done 1300 miles to then sell it on to claim they've had the ferrari porsche aston ownership experience.

The people who drive their cars are the ones that have true ownership experience.

Julian987R I Know from reading your posts you do seem to have a thing about the 'losses' that new cars incur , Each to his own and everything but does it really matter , isnt enjoyment more important than money because unless I have missed something when Im gone its going to get left behind

"but if you cant afford to lose 20-25% on a 75k car over 24 months and 20k miles, buy a cheaper car." yup I agree
