I just rang my local dealer and asked if I could order one. They had one last allocation available.
Does this mean production is coming to an end for the Cayman and Boxster GTS 4.0?

No ... it means the dealer had one allocation available from their allocations .....

Did the dealer explain the 'allocation' and the ordering processes, and give an estimated spec lock for the build?

They just said they have one allocation available which would freeze over the next few days. (now frozen)

Have you ordered a new Porsche before?/are you familiar with the ordering process? Not being patronising or condescending but its reading at this stage like the dealer just wanted your (so called) deposit.

Yes I have, and yes I am. Each time, the process has been the same.

What do you suppose I have missed in this instance?

Nothing, did they give you a spec lock date then (or anticipated date), just curious.

I placed the order last Wednesday with a spec lock date of the Thursday or Friday.
Email confirmation yesterday: "The 718 Boxster GTS 4.0 is all locked in for October build and due to arrive early November."

The sceptic in me is now wondering if this is for October/November 2024! tongue out

Seems you have been very lucky as all OPCs have waiting lists. One would have assumed the OPC would/should then have offered the allocation to the next on the list.

Only 2 letters different in reg number to the white Cayman GTS 4.0 I have yet to pick up from Bolton. Looks great in red! Really must get around to sorting out PPF and collecting the car soon.

Spotted this for sale in Reading OPC this morning, brand new, interesting spec, at £89.5K.

Apart from being new at a ridiculous price, there's not much point in 718 GTS 4.0
Get a used 981 (not even S) and you'll get literally the same 2-3x times cheaper, with a better exhaust note.

I believe OPCs are a law unto themselves when it comes to this kind of thing. A car dealer acquaintance of mine, who hasn’t had a relationship with Porsche for a number of years, was cold called out of the blue by an OPC near me offering him a GT4 build slot. He collected the car last month. It’s currently for sale on his website at a tidy mark up. Shady dealings and OPC allocations go hand in hand.

Well you won't literally as it's 'only' a 2.9 or 3.4.

And having come from a 981 GTS to the new one, I have actual experience and by all measures the 4.0 is a step on in every way, except engine sound. Torque and general driveability is better, steering better, etc. Sure it's perhaps not worth £25-30k more for those benefits, but it is a superior car.

There's some truth in this. However, I got PTS. That is a massive factor for me in ordering a new Porsche. But yes - the car is too fast. Great though the 4.0 is, you can't nail it through the gears as there is too much power for the gear ratios. A 2.9 would be more satisfying most of the time.

Still... 4 litres right?!

Now I come to think of it, the 718 cockpit (along with seamless Carplay and that steering wheel) is probably peak Porsche cockpit along with the 991.2. Again, that's important to me

I'm not disagreeing with you but my only correction would be "except EXHAUST sound" rather than engine sound - which is a small but important difference. The GTS 4.0 engine sound is IMHO amazing - the howl over 6k is something else. Yes, no pops, bangs and growls but I'm ok with that. (just my opinion)

Having recently made that move, and I would suggest you have never driven the 4.0 in anger or at all.
It is a far better car in every aspect. It may not have the exhaust crackle of the 3.4 or 2.9, but the intake noise is totally addictive. Add to that a simple Cargraphic valve controller and it sounds b****y good and.
Sellers are still looking for 50k + for a 981 GTS which is now around 8 years old, so I am quite happy to have paid another 30k for an 8 years newer..brand new car.
However enjoy your 981 beer
