Don't forget to factor in the £5k you'll need to run it for the year.

Agreed I am always amazed at the price of a Macca warranty compared to Porsche £ 600 for a GT4 is a no brainer.
I think the cost of a Macca warranty reflects badly on the marques reliability, possibly unfairly.

I might be wrong, but I detect this assumption from you that we are only buying GT4 because we cannot afford GT3.

What about if we just prefer GT4s to GT3s because of engine layout and driving dynamics etc
That’s why I went for the GT4, turned down a 3 allocation, then got lucky with the 4RS

They handle very differently and I don’t enjoy the driving style required for the GT3, it just doesn’t suit me personally

GT3 will always be faster, have more grip, better aero, and is a superior car with the various technology improvements… but I just don’t enjoy driving them as much

Collected my GT4 this afternoon and drove it the 300 miles home.

I’m a little bit worried about some of the sounds it is making hoping you guys can shed some light.

Between 2-3k it sounds it sounds quite chattery and a little rough, is this normal?

Has a pretty much constant high pitch whine almost like a super charger, got drowned out if you rev it a lot. But always there at a cruise got worse as I started to enjoy myself closer to home.

Just a bit worried could need a trip to OPC already.
All sounds normal to me. The GT4 is quite a noisy car inside and makes loads of little noises like whines, pings, etc.
Thanks to everyone getting back to me.

I was just quite surprised by the whine more than anything. It's louder than the induction or exhaust. Spent a large part of the drive sat there worrying I had bought a lemon.

I will confess I had been up since 5am and I was hung over. I had missed my connecting train as well. Probably wasn't in the best state for a drive home in horrific rain in something so raw.

Hopefully I can relax about it all and enjoy it now I know its normal.

The general mechanical noise, droning and whining is the least enjoyable facet of GT4 ownership in my opinion. I’ve had several now and they are noisy tiresome beasts for a long drive if your not in the mood. They do vary but the whining belt noise on my current 22MY car is awful. The Spyder with its extra bulkhead between the cabin and the engine is a far quieter and more sonorous affair.
Looking forwards to my 4RS arriving, everything I read tells me that the revised induction system whilst noisy makes a “good noise” if there is such a thing!
Best to concentrate on the chassis and excellent driving dynamics of the GT4, rather than listen to the bag of spanners behind your head. driving

Mine is 22MY as well and my first GT car. I moved from 718 Cayman S to the GT4, and I don’t particularly feel that the GT4 is more ‘whiny’ than the flat 4 Cayman S

Why don’t you take it to your local OPC to listen to the sound as well. At least the reassurance from them would give you a peace of mind

That was the main reason I’ve just sold mine (today) love the looks and many other joys of the 718 GT4 but I’ve had enough and so it was time to move her on.

Personally, I love all the mechanical noises of Porsche GT cars. They give character in an increasingly sanitised world.

If you want silent, buy electric...

I think you're going to find the 4RS much, much worse on a long drive. They're certainly no cruiser!

You are funny how you respond sometimes to others POV. who said anything about ‘silent’?

Personally I’ve just grow tired of the noise and it was a contributing factor to my decision to sell her, I’m sure I’m not the first or the last.

The GT4 718 or 981 are wonderful things I’m glad you’re still enjoying yours and long may that continue …..

Having driven quite a few 718 GT4s and Spyders they do seem to vary engine noise wise. Haven't got a problem with mine any whining noises seem to disappear once warmed up. Prefer the variable induction noises internally of the 718 to the 981 GT4 external exhaust noises and the 718 doesn't actually sound much different to the admittedly more authentic and fantastic sound of the GT3 tbh.

Spyder is quieter but much of the engine noise is unfortunately drowned out by wind noise from the hood.

It was on overexaggeration of course, and we all have different tolerances to NVH. I didn't mean to offend anyone, apologies if it came across that way smile

Sorry the GT4 didn't work out for you, I hope the next car does!

Aye but it’s the quality of the noise that counts. I really don’t mind very noisy cars, I’ve got quite a few laugh I have had almost every generation of GT3 and I never found the noise of those annoying, quite the opposite. I think it’s a bit of a feature of the Cayman platform maybe? Saying that my Cayman R was a far nicer car to live with day to day for NVH than any of my GT4s. So perhaps it’s unique to the GT4.
I totally get that some people will move on from a GT4 for this reason, entirely understandable in my view.

Well I currently own both a 718GT4 CS Manual and a just arrived GT4 RS and they sound completely different. The 4RS is obviously louder but its a much much nicer sound and if you keep the revs under 6k surprisingly good cruiser.
Over 6k it really wakes up both in noise and go but what happens over 7k remains to be seen as I'm still running her in.

A couple of reviews have exaggerated how noisy the 4RS is, apart from possibly over 7k revs. The ride quality is so much better than I expected after reading a couple of reviews. The most accurate journo reviews I've read or watched so far is Steve Sutcliffe and Henry Catchpole.
By coincidence probably the two best car journos out there right now even globally IMO.

I love all the noises my GT4 makes, in all the rev ranges. In fact, it would even be better if it were louder below 4K rpm
