Looks like a great example in an obviously ‘GTS’ colour. Who cares how many owners it’s had, FFS?

Price is a bit high, but if you want one now that’s just what they cost.

I'm stuck in two minds on what to do with mine, I bought it in May expecting my 718 CGTS order to take a year or so, but it will now be here in January so I'm faced with either selling the 981 BGTS now or waiting for January and seeing where it is. I'm not going to be able to keep both, more for practicality reasons than anything

It will probably stay in the garage from November so have a month or so to work it out, I guess neither time is ideal to sell a convertible, but interesting to see the number appearing for sale now. I can't imagine I'll do well either way, but no interest in getting hammered by the OPC when the time comes.

I've added it to mine, I think it provides a nice howl up the rev range. It's funny on the GTS it's considered to be a good thing whereas the 991 and 718 guys are blocking theirs up.
no surprise really

in the 981 GTS it's real exhaust sound. they just make it easier for the sound to get into the cabin via a pipe that opens up

with the 781 (the 2.5T) the sound is fake and comes in through the speakers

not sure about the 4.0 and the 911 though

You might be surprised to learn that the sound symposer doesn't pipe exhaust sound or any real sound into the cabin, it transfers the differences in pressure to a diaphragm that vibrates and creates sound. It's there to increase your perception of intake roar.

The 718 4.0l has the same system as the 981.

This is not correct. There is a resonator between the seats that moves in time with the engine revs, and can be deactivated by pulling a 7.5A fuse. It does not play fake sound via the stereo… laugh

Happy birthday op.

Wow what a day!
Happy Birthday to me indeed. And thanks guys for the good wishes.

Well, it’s done. Special thanks to my lovely wife who went with me and has acutely paid for half the car!

The sellers were lovely and a good deal was done that we are all happy with. It’s the 50k car that’s on auto trader in Huntingdon by the way. It’s almost perfect, a couple of things to sort out.
Done my first mod already!

First mod…..

either way it's fake noise vs real noise in the 981, which is the point i was making to the person who asked about it earlier

Hmm, a resonating diaphragm transferring pressure differentials through a pipe is not fake in the 981 yet a resonator transferring pressure differentials and engine roar into the cabin is fake in the 718? Riiiggghhht. rofl

Personally I’d call them both unnecessary ‘enhancements’. I suppose at least in the 718 you can deactivate it by simply pulling a fuse.

believe what you want to believe

fact is one is fake engine noise piped in through a speaker and one is real epic engine noise piped in through what is essentially a hole between the engine bay and the cabin

the hole can be closed by pressing the button on the centre console if you just want regular epic sound

I px’d it to them against their Agate grey 981 Spyder…

Couldn’t find a private sale Spyder I wanted, hence

I would say they have priced it quite fairly ! Like all these things, some may want lower miles, some may like the mega-spec

What I can say is that with ppf in all vulnerable places and ceramic coating done from new, the bodywork is in better condition than the spyder which has done less than half the miles. Eg no stone chipping at all, immaculate sills and arches etc etc

Ah, I see. I did like the look of that Agate Grey Spyder. I'd be interested to hear what your observations are between these two cars. Had your GTS been around 20,000 miles, I would have been vey interested, lovely spec and probably the only one in the UK like it.

If I had not already bought mine I would have bought that GTS, I looked at it many times previously when it was for sale, great spec .

How you finding the Spyder? I went the other way and find the GTS is the better and easier car for me to live.

not really driven the Spyder in anger yet, however

no question that a PDK GTS is a better, easier day to day car...and also I would say far better value

I did 4k miles in mine in over the summer through Scotland, in UK and then to SW France and back, and I cant think of a scenario that it wasnt great in. Really good cars, and in my opinion ample performance on the road.

However, I dont drive it daily and I dont need it as "transport" so I wanted something a bit more special (with a nod to residuals and rare Porsches are usually a good starting point). Whether its an actual thing or just in my head, the Spyder just feels a bit special, and the manual shift is one of the best I've had (over 40 cars). So snickety and precise. I really like the smaller wheel and faster rack as well

Every journey is a mini event and the PITA bits (roof, carbon buckets, fewer gadgets) kind of add to that... but I would def think different if I drove it every day. GTS with heated buckets, radar cruise, Bose etc really was a do everything car.

So... Spyder is a GTS plus maybe 15% , and probably 15% less useful as a vehicle. But I've paid plus 50% for the privilege. Not rational really but that said I dont see it going down much / ever? as an NA analogue 3.8 flat six manual that they made c. 250 of RHD. Love the shape and in grey its not shouty at all yet the shape is still special. Residuals are v strong so you can do PCP alike low monthlies

where does that leave me...if I'm honest I suspect a 4.0 BGTS is the sweetspot for me... so I dont rule out that being next, but there were too few about (and none in colours / spec I wanted), also £10-15k more wonga
