In mid May I took my S2 on my first trip to the ring. It was just a long weekend, but the car was great. Averaged ~31mpg for the overall trip. Only did 5 laps of the ring, my first 2 were wet/dry with a spin on my first lap at Kallenhard ( that scared me a little). But by lap 4 I had managed a 9:06 BTG with loads of room for improvement. I didn't time when driving and just reviewed Gopro footage afterwards. Felt quite pleased, not bad for a car that ticked over 190k on the trip.
That's me very early in the vid clip. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XyW2v0-kmGU NS2Rs arent great in the wet....well thats my excuse anyway.. ;-)
One of my most enjoyable track days ever was in my first Porsche - an S2 - in torrential rain at Knockhill, with very little tread on the rear tyres. That's me very early in the vid clip. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XyW2v0-kmGU NS2Rs arent great in the wet....well thats my excuse anyway.. ;-)
I thought it would be a recipe for disaster, but was amazed at the grip actually available, and how easy and enjoyable the car was to control on the limit of that grip in the corners.

Ultimately probably little difference on the road between an S2 and a 968 in similar mechanical condition. I believe the power difference is offset by the S2 being lighter.I thought it would be a recipe for disaster, but was amazed at the grip actually available, and how easy and enjoyable the car was to control on the limit of that grip in the corners.

Cor! What a big crank you have
Going backwards now... But at least the journals are all in good nick, can't say the same about a couple of the mains There's some very strange marks on the nose bearing, almost like tool marks... But the crank has very little visible wear. I didn't think the motor had ever been open before, but now I'm not so sure. Very odd!
It's now with the machine shop for a quick re-polish of the journals and rebalance to suit the new Fidanza flywheel. I did consider having every last ounce of material machined off it, along with some 'speed holes' for good measure, but well, I'm not an idiot

Very odd mark - could some debris have got stuck in there?Going backwards now... hmmm..where to find a 3.0 crank?
Don't do this to me!!! I'm easily distracted
In all seriousness though the pistons are staying put as I rebuilt the top end only 2 years back (less than 5k miles on it). With it now being a race car I figure that it probably won't be all that long until its apart again and then I'll be looking at options for the next stage... Currently mulling over whether I should just look to acquire a 16v motor to build up when this one goes back in. Whichever way you look at it increasing capacity isn't going to be cheap, so I may as well go balls out Plus a 16v would make great power without needing to run much boost, which is bonus. Also a must for the next build will be the ability to run proper rod bearings!!
But I should really keep my focus on the task in hand! I may well drop you a line though Ed.
