Just saw this thread,
I ran a 944 Turbo S in the 2010 CSCC Future Classic series as a complete novice, it was road legal converted road car and had only light performance mods and ran a safe unstressed 1 bar boost with a simple and economical GAZ race suspension.
Raced for a whole season with no DNF, was very competitive against some proper dedicated racecars on similar road tyres, Lotus Esprit( full monty racecar), various 911s,Aston Martin,928s and it generally held its own against some experienced "known"pilots..
My response to OP question ,yes its massively underrated and Huge fun to drive quickly, It finished the Spa summer classic 1 hr race up amongst the Caterhams and came first in the future Classics class in that race, in torrential rain and on road tyres .
Raced a 968 for 4 years after was not quite as much fun, would love to race a 944 turbo again one day. Still got a couple of road versions so maybe i am biased..

Effortlessly quick and well driven...
Come back - even bigger grids and not enough Turbos...
Definitely getting my 944T back for next year... Finally got the rose jointing of the rear sorted... And then it's off to Wayne for a proper mapping. Hoping for some decent numbers...
Alex
I look back very fondly on my 944 turbo experiences back in the day. Here's one...

they are undeinably great cars.
Anyone here have any ides of the cost to get a road car to 951 Cup Car spec? i would immagine the magnesium wheels are a big cost.
I never tracked my 951 as i was too afraid to damage it but now would really like to build a track day one - if only prices could go back to where they used to be (think i paid £4.7k for mine and sold for nearly £20k, now i'd like prices to go back down )

If you are referring to the £30-50k+ auction cars, maybe they have. The really good £20k cars that actually get used sparingly, probably not.
But by default of the £30-£50K+ auction cars hitting peak prices, then the £20K ones have stalled in price increases too. I've been monitoring it as an ex 944Turbo owner of 12 years (until recently sold a few months) ago, and 944 prices have flatlined or dropping.I had a 1988 220bhp 944 Turbo that I kept for 12 years and did over 80,000 miles in .
A truly brilliant car -- so much more useable than the V12 monsters , but just as memorable .
And you could trust it look after you at high speed , and at high G's .
Build quality was outstanding .
BUT , it was expensive to maintain , and as the years piled on , it became inordinately expensive to maintain properly .
I miss it a lot , but not the bills
