Last night I couldn’t sleep in dear that someone may buy it .

hot rods are what the odd person will pay, as they are a bit of a nothing car once modded again reps the same, one might say worthless in 20 years who knows.
mainly done by some one who wants to keep for ever as they love it and built it how then wanted.

for the price of some now, you could buy a old factory built car , say a 911S, which will always be a factory built car.

12 years ago take this as an example, 964 was £20k say but you could have got a 964 RS LW for £37k, yes double at the time.

and the 964 guy sells his car now for £50k and is happy, the RS owners has a £200k car !

IF you modded the 964 then it might be worth £80k to about 3 people and cost £40k to do, but the £37k RS owner is still well up on either.

Funny things modded cars as you do it to a BMW people take the piss, you make a Bitsa Porker and people love them.

the 964 was a great platform to add KW, RS flywheel and recaros say £6k mods, modded cars at £100k seem scary buys to me, for that you can buy a factory built 997.2 GT3 CS.

I get hot rods as it's the love of making something you want to your own spec you plan to keep, Reps and backdates, no thanks buy a real one.

only my view of course.

^^^ fair points but one very important bit you miss. People generally build them to drive them surely?

Looking at it from a financial perspective of course always better to buy the blue chip time warp 1971 911s which has not been modified.

I think people who build these things act like the build process more lol Although the end goal should be to drive them of course.

I think there's maybe a bit more to it. A few build them like Chris Harris for example built Kermit via Tuthill. Maybe go way over budget then want straight out due to affordability and the best time to sell is when the car has just been completed and dialled in. You can spend £100-150k building your perfect hot rod its still only worth what someone else is willing to pay for it as you say and the market for those sort of cars will be limited. It is slowly starting to change but UK buyers will always be conservative unless the car they are buying has warranty etc. As an example my friend just sold his 9e 997 turbo with the same GT2 VTG power pack I have for more than a stock car. So 30,000 miles, manual , 2007, 997.1 turbo with 9e 28 power kit. Sold for £80k with 12 month bumper to bumper warranty via 9e! Stock one worth £65k maybe?

I am watching this thread with interest, I ahve been looking at something modded for a little while.

So far have looked at 3 modded cars, one 70's rsr'ish looking car, guy wanted 80k but it was quite tatty and the fit and finnish was poor.

Then a back dated 1980's 2.7rs replica and finally a Paul Stevens car.

All three were £50-£80k

All had their merits but all have been for sale for between 6 and 12 months. Which put me off a little.

I am not sure if its the price that puts people off or that they are built quite specifically to the owners taste.

Have another couple to look at this week

Couple of reasons, one is I have a nice 993 factory car anyway.

Also have a few other toys

The one thing I miss is something a bit raw hence why I started looking, I also had an original 2.7rs RHD lightweight until a couple of years ago. I had it restored and a combination of value / being too good to use meant it had to go.

I have even looked at a couple of cup cars with a view to putting them on the road (996's) which isnt that hard to do but I really dont like LHD.

Hope that makes some sense

Have to admit I keep looking at pre impact bumper cars too. These two have also been in the classifieds a while and I think the green one has maybe changed hands between three dealers in last 18 months but not 100%? They look lovely. At £75k to £85k I'd be very interested but unfortunately a bit too expensive. They look like pretty good useable reps on the face of it.

A well executed hot rod can be a joy to drive. Pick all the best bits from the 911 back catalogue and tune and set up to your liking. They are usually more focused than the official Porsche offerings and can be customised. What is not to like? Just buy a good one and pay according to the quality of the car.

Largest problem is that there are 10 bad ones for every good car but its not obvious which is which and they are often priced optimistically (when only the 1 is worth it).

Have a proper look over a good one and I am sure you will be impressed.

The Paul Stephens “Le Man Classic Clubsport” was there and doesn’t looking anything like a £250k car to me (the fact they’re still marketing it presumably means they haven’t sold the 10 they are building), there was the Oshe design pastiche of a Singer....which might be half the price of a Singer but the Singer was head and shoulders above it,

The Tuthill car looked Miles’s better than both the Paul Stephens and Oshe Car.

I thought the same thing. A lot of these back dates are up for sale at all the money, yet the fit and finish of the majority I've seen is awful. I wouldn't accept it on a £10k VW Beetle, let alone something that's over 10 times the price. I'm not sure why anyone would accept it, if the jobs worth doing, then do it properly

Never a truer word. My own 911 is currently being backdated/restomodded. It's something I've weighed up for a couple of years and in the process I've looked at quite a few backdates in the flesh and literally hundreds on social media. The number of cars you see that have had panels and trim simply bought, sprayed and bolted on wherever they lay is disheartening. Terrible panel gaps, trim gaps, uneven from side to side and skewed.

Mine is being done by a respected specialist and the amount of fettling they're having to do on not only the brand new panels, bumpers and trim, but also the existing parts of the car to get it looking right is astounding. As an example, one brand new wing was 4mm shorter than the other. Some people may try to account for that in how they're bolted together, but it shows to people who care. Maybe to many laymen it won't be apparent, but I couldn't live with the car if it a horn grill was off centre and the bonnet was badly aligned. It's very time consuming and requires skill and patience. It's not a cheap process, but if you're going to do it then do it right.

That’s an interesting point but it begs the question (to me only perhaps) of what the fk to do with it once it’s done?

I’ve had a car (nut and bolt resto) that was that perfect but I didn’t feel I could use it the way it was intended or how I like to.

Even driving at 8/10s I’ve still had a few mishaps, I don’t think I could be arsed with something that cost so much to put right.

Rather conversely the only car id actually of been happy with driving how I want was one of the poorer examples cosmetically of a 3.0rsr back date.

Cheap fibreglass panels and bumpers, a half decent spray job and not that sinking feeling of a huge chunk of orange paint being chipped off by a nice stone chip!

Sad thing is that rough and ready back date is probably worth as much as a cheap GT3 these days.

This is my 1997 993 Carrera S which I have owned for 9 years. My first Porsche was a 1995 993 Carrera, then I progressed to a 996 C4S and then a 996 turbo. As good as the 996's were I always missed the looks, noise and build quality of a 993 and so I vowed to one day own another one. I bought my current car with the sole intention of making it personal to me, I didn't want an RS or RSR replica, I just wanted a car which was a bit lighter on it's feet, a little bit louder than standard and something which made you laugh out loud when the right road was in front of you. Basics are totally stripped interior, plexiglass all round apart from front screen, modified/lightened exhaust, lightweight battery, lightweight bucket seats with Willans harnesses, half cage, BBS LM wheels, suspension rebuild close to RS specification, aircon delete, sunroof delete, etc, etc. Result is a car which weighs 1260kg, sounds so sublime and goes like a scalded rat. Cost me 22k several years ago and would now be worth way more than that but I don't care, it's a 993 exactly how I always wanted it. Hope fellow Pistonheads can appreciate, and understand, it. Thank you
