I was wondering how the aircooled weights went from early SWB cars, to the 73 era, the IBs, 964s and 993s.

Being the iconic car, how much does a 73 RS lighteweight er weigh?

73RS LW is about 960kg I think. The 993 Carrera was about 1350.

For homologation purposes, the original RSs were in RS'H' specification (significantly de-specced) when taken to the local weighing station, and weighed about 900kg.

M471 RS Sport (aka 'lightweight') was typically 975kg and the M472 RS Lux (aka 'Touring') was typically 1075kg - although, with options, probably quite a bit more.

I often wonder what could really be achieved on a new 911 if Porsche really wanted to make a light car.

Surely 1200kg is possible if they removed all of the electronic guff?

They wont do it of course as they want to sell all of the extras. The irony is that the more power equals more control systems equals more weight etc etc. Its a revolving door. We need a revolution!

Right, Im off to look at Caterhams....

The first 1964 2.0L SWB car was exactly 1000 kg
1970 2.2S was 1020 kg
1972 2.4S was 1050 kg
1973 2.7RS was 975 kg (M471)
1974 C2.7 was 1075 kg (first impact bumper)
1976 C3.0 was 1120 kg
1978 SC was 1160 kg
1984 C3.2 was 1160 kg
1986 C3.2 was 1210 kg (first G50 gearbox)
1990 964 C2 was 1350 kg
1992 964 RS was 1250 kg

So they basically put on weight over the years and there was a pretty big jump from the C3.2 to 964
Note these are factory figures with no options specified, so actual cars could be a fair bit heavier with a few ticks on the options list.

My 2.4S was pretty minimalist, factory spec without head restraints, no sunroof, not even a radio! So probably quite close to the factory weight quoted.

They should make the new gt3 rs as a proper lwt,or at least offer a true cs spec, for those of us that want it.It could then be a similar weight to the cup car, rather than a few kg lighter than the ever lardy gt3.
My old 993 rs was down to 1120kg wet.
My current early racer is 1050 kg,fuelled and driversmile
Porsche weights are normally dry weights quoted.

my forthcoming '89 hot-rod weighed in at 1075 wet, so it's interesting to see where it fits.

We've not gone super lightweight, but just stripped and not put much back in! It has lightweight carpets, no sunroof, manual windows, no a/c (of course)!

Thanks for confirming that because it explains why my 964C2 with lots of weight reduction was still tipping the scales at 1305 Kg compared to the standard 1350 Kg. However it had 3/4 of a tank of fuel at the time so I'm not as disappointed with the result now. smile

You could ask Bugatti's head of design if he wants to part with his project car. Perspex windows, all body panels are kevlar, 820 kg. smile

From about 1980 Porsche quoted weight are DIN weight which is no occupants, all fluids and 90% full fuel tank.
There've been loads of discrepancies over recent years highlights were the 997GT3s which were much heavier than the DIN quotes (had lots of yanks up in arms) and the CGT which was nearer 1500kg DIN on the road as opposed to the much lauded 1380kg DIN.

The answer is mostly that Porsche weighed the most bare bones spec they could produce with zero extras.

The latest one is the 997GT2 RS which they got down to 1370kg for the DIN quote, customer cars with 90l tanks, leather, PCM, aircon, cages etc came in nearer 1420kg DIN

The earlier cars may be dry weights, I dunno ?

I was referring to the earlier cars,i thought even th 993 were dry weights.
Any way the fun part is the 330bhp and 1050 fully loaded,on historic tyres.
The other fun one was the gt2r,1140 kg and 550 bhp spin

Not sure how you would get near 820 with a galv sc tub,920 possibly.
For the 73 rs weighing session they even went to the lengths of 6 inch wheels alround,no spare wheel etc
