I am a new member and am looking forward to being educated on my Porsche by all you experts! Maybe sharing some wisdom or experience that I have achieved during my Porsche ownership.
i have just got my 1989 Porsche 930 MOT'd after a long layoff.
However with the car sitting in my garage for 2 weeks whilst i recovered from a small op, I find that it will not start, it turns over readily but no way will it fire.
i think that it might be an immobiliser issue because the battery, which is new, runs down after about 10 days and when i reconnect the battery after charging there is a strange intermittent clicking noise from the area in the front of the car where the immobiliser is located. The wiring in this area seems to me like a "black art" and I haven't a clue where to start.
Anyone know a good car electrics expert in the MK area? How easy is it to remove or bypass the immobiliser?

I had a similiar issue with my 3.2. It was the immobilizier part of my alarm.
Luckily I still had the instructions and it led me too a code pad. After removing a battery in my car I have to enter a pin to get the car to start again.

So it might be a similiar problem. Can't help with a engineer but I would suggest hunting for a pin pad and looking for alarm instructions in your paperwork on on the web. Good luck.

Hello David

A fellow 89 930 owner here!
You say you are a new member & I was wondering how long you have had your car?
Have these problems just started,because I've had my car for about 3 years now & even with a new batery, mine will only stand for a week to ten days without use, before I need to charge the battery.

I have had my car since 1998 and I have always had the problem with the battery running down. I have a new battery now but it is still dead after a week or 10 days of inactivity. I have just bought a trickle charger which is permanently connected whilst the car is in my garage. I put the voltage draw down to the immobiliser which I think might also be the reason that i can't get it to fire. At first I thought it was the little red lights in the door locks running the battery down but last time it happened I didn't lock the car and still it went flat.
You can see my car on my profile page, it is LHD with 50K on the clock, all original except the radio which is not a Blaupunkt which I believe it should be. Was in it when I got it. I guess yours has the 5 speed box like mine.
My car was originally in a motor museum somewhere in the north of England having been imported from Bussells sometime in the mid nineties.
When it is running the only real criticism I have is the terrible heating and ventilation which still confuses me when I try to read about it in my owner's manual.

Hello David

Do you have a little key that you plugs in for a couple of seconds followed by a few beeps?
If so, drop me a PM and I'll let you know how to bypass it.
It's actually pretty straightforward to do.

The flat battery thing is quite common, my 3.2 goes about 10 days, I just sit it on a trickle charger in the off season. I suspect for that it is the window relay as you can open the windows when the doors are shut and no key in the ignition.

The ventilation is crap but quite easy to understand. There are tow leavers, one for hot air and one for cold air. The movement of the leavers controls the direction of the air, from all the way up (screen) to all the way down (feet) , so you can have hot up, cold down or mixed and in between etc. The other lever controls the amount of fresh air from none to some, and finally there is the fan speed.

Between the seats there is the heater control from off to bloody hot. It operates a bit like climate in that there is a temperature sensor that turns the heating off when it thinks it is hot.

Basically it seems to work best in the cold, at least you can get warm, it just when it is hot outside you can't really get enough air in, combined with the upright windscreen and how close you sit too hit, you end up cooking.

Sorry can't help with the starting thing.

Sorry to be repetitive, but if you think it's an alarm issue get Karl Gunn to look at it. 911 Virgin recommended him and he's done bits and pieces on my 993 including looking at the alarm which went on the blink at the Le Mans Classic this year (immobiliser). He knows all the systems installed, pluses and minuses. If you are in MK I am sure he will go there. He's a radio/in-car hi-fi/alarm man.

Sorry for the delay in responding.Work!
Yes mine has the G50 5 speed box.
I've owned if for about 3 years.
Much higher mileage than yours though & a few gaps in the history.
But I think it's a straight car,HPI clear & I've done so much work on it myself now, that for me at least,the cars past is not an issue.
Have you managed to resolve the starting problem?

i've had an '88 since 2010 and the battery usually only lasts for 2 weeks or so if the car isn't used - ctek trickle chargers are a must in my opinion - great cars!!
