I've just become the proud owner of an '89 964 Carrera 4 manual coupé. Pics to follow - promise smile

I am looking to replace the standard wheels (Cups I think) with BBS LM's. Can anyone give me definitive advice on best size and offset, and where to buy from? Would also like to get Porsche centres too if possible. Car is running standard suspension - no plans to lower it. Other than the BBS' I'm a bit of a closet OEM bufty.

Any other wheel choices to consider for 964? I'm sure there will be lots more questions to come!

Thanks in advance,

Behr.

89 C4s didn't come with cups as standard. Cups came later in the model range ('92 I think?) - early cars come with 16" D90s.

Cups are actually a popular upgrade from D90s for the early cars (often to 17", although I put 16" cups on mine). Can't remember offsets, but I'm sure somebody will add that (I had spacers on my rears).

Maybe this will help a bit to learn more about the 964.

Excellent attention to detail with the use of the acute accent, Sir.

Info re offsets is easily found online, and go to Rennlist 964 Forum, they have more wheel threads than you can shake a 5mm spacer at.

And you must change the suspension, sorry its the rules. You don't need to stanceworks it, but if it is on its factory shocks it they will be about 15 years past their best by now. And if it is at factory ride height and geo, the car will be falling way short of its handling potential.

And do pop a G pipe on there too, it will make you happy. Just saying.

You can keep the orange indicators if you like. biggrin

Sorry, but LM's are pretendy. You need a set of E88 BBS, proper wheels, CNC machined spokes etc.
Plus G pipes are a bit on the harsh side?
Nicest 964 I heard was all standard bar pre silencer bypass pipe ( the one across the rear bumper).
Still had the cat and suitcase silencer, and a sound to make the hairs on your neck stand up!

One of the lovely things about a '64 is that it comes with 3 exhaust bypass options, depending on sir's preferences. All equally easy and cheap.

Cat (NSR wheelarch), primary silencer (under rear bumper), and secondary silencer (OSR wheelarch).

G pipe is secondary bypass and makes it bassy, unique to the 964 really - never thought it was rough sounding. I think you can get long necked ones now which might be more betterer.

Not much difference between primary and secondary bypasses. Cat bypass adds a bit of raucousness. You will be fine losing the cat as it an 89 car. Cat plus one of the silencers bypassed is fun, if a bit shouty. 3 out of 3 is too much!

Thanks G.

I tried to join Rennlist this week after seeing multiple referrals to the both on PH and when searching for '964' on Google. Tried to register and pay my $$ for a proper membership and got binned-off to some a website where I had been "reported for spam". I tried it twice with the same result. I then tried emailing the admin team but still no reply/acknowledgment of the issue after 3 days. Ho hum.

And don't forget to drill out the airbox! In fact I would do that first (its free after all!) and see if it creates the sound you're after.

Hi OP,

I would suggest getting as close to 10J ET47 and a 8J ET52 for an easy fitment. You will want 265 and 225 respectively. I don't believe Porsche centre caps exist for BBS wheels.

You'll want to source them new from Gert at Carnewell following a strong reputation from the 964 gang. The second hand ones post above will fit fine, but you may wish to add a 5mm (max for safety) shim to fill the arches nicely on the rears.

LM's are not pretend. They are very good and strong wheels for road applications.

BBS Motorsport wheels such as E88s and the period mag equivalents (E28s & GT2s etc) are track wheels which may not be suited to road use. Motorsport wheels are designed to be light weight and consumable. Race teams will throw out parts of three pieces as they wear.

The lips & barrels for example on BBS motorsport wheels are aluminium and so are prone to bending on anything but a smooth race track.

I run period Mag GT2s with soft compound on track and have a separate set for pot holed UK roads. That's not to say I haven't run BBSs on road as other 964 owners also do, but you must be very careful.

I'm having these 18 inch Eta Beta Krones fitted, along with Bilsteins/H&Rs, on my ''89 targa at JAZ this week. I've had to wait two months for the shocks to arrive. So, I'm really looking forward to seeing how the car sits with the new set up.
