Just bought a 964 C2 Targa.

I had one before but cant remember which fuel one should use - normal or is high octane required/better?

Thanks
Piers

When I had my 964 C2 Targa I usually filled up with normal unleaded from Shell and then every 4th fill I would put in Shell V-Power (at the time).

Don't noticed any performance gain but thought that putting in the Optimax would assist with any cleaning additives that they put in the petrol.

I put ordinary, and super in mine. But only fuels from the big names, and garages when I can with a high turnover.

The 964 was designed for at least RON 95, even the Turbo.
Hope this helps.

At least? You can't get less than RON95 anywhere these days can you?
I guess the OP is asking does he go for standard SUL RON95 or higher rated 'premium' RON97/98

Sorry if i offended you with my intend to help, let me rephrase:
The 964 was designed for RON 95, even the Turbo.

No offence caused, nice reply.
So would RON97/98 bring any benefit over RON95, given: the 964 was designed for RON 95, even the Turbo.

The ECU was originally set up for 95RON. So theoretically can't take advantage of higher RON. Whereas modern Porsche engines are set up for higher RON but can 'adapt' to run lower RON when necessary (certainly the case on the boxsters I owned). The 964 ECU can't 'adapt' to the fuel available.

However, some might say that the additives in the fuel of higher RON would still be beneficial to the engine. Improve its lifetime even if it doesn't improve the performance? Those that have had their 964s 'chipped' and mapped on a rolling road will mostly likely have had it done while running higher RON. So in those cases they'll need to use the good stuff.

Personally, I've not noticed any difference in performance (or economy) when using 97+ RON instead of the normal 95RON in my 964. My 964 still has the '95RON' sticker on the petrol flap.

IMHO, I'm not an engineer, but i don't think it has any benefit to get RON 97/98
if the car's computer is designed for RON 95.

thanks boxsey & PTT. Yes agree no point in anything higher than RON95 if the ECU cannot adapt.

Wonder how many 964 owners use V-Power-Nitro over 95RON....

My manual says "minimum RON 95", and www.porsche.com/all/media/pdf/originalparts/.../E_... implies RON 98 for UK cars.

Been using 95 for over 10 years now and no ill effects that I can see. The main one to avoid is E10 fuel as this can apparently corrode the fuel lines, although I've not heard of any specific cases of this yet with the 964.
