I FEEL COMMITTED TO ADD MY 15 YEARS OF PORSCHE OWNERSHIP TO THE DEBATE- ALSO A QUIET MORNING WHICH IS UNUSUAL - sorry i am a porsche fan but i love all fast cars !!!!! with character

I HAVE A 996 3.4 CARRERA AND I ALSO OWN AN 84 CARRERA 3.2

this is a real life comparison - they are both fantastic cars in their own right, i ABSOLUTELY adore the look of the 3.2 without the whailtail, mine is coupe in black - stunning - it must be said the 3.2 is by no means a modern car- but thats the joy really ! its easy to live with and can be driven when ever i fancy !!!
it handles beautifully and is reasonably quick !!! no supercar though!

Here's the rub - i went out in a TVR sagaris - yes it beautiful and faster than the 996, however the 996 gets such bad press and i do not understand why, its one of the most accessible race cars on the planet for driving quickly, i have owned this for nearly 10 years, and everytime i drive it like this morning in the rain, even after coming out of a sagaris, there is just something pure in the 996, i have a sport exhaust and sports suspension which helps!!

this 996 does not get the credit it deserves and due to over supply and poorly maintained cars these cars get a bad reputation, porsche owners who understand cars know that engines need to be fully warmed up and that coolant is vitally topped up when needed- so if this is done - there is no problem with the engines

even though i own one of the most iconic classics, i still hanker to drive the 996 - credit where credit is due

SO THERE WE ARE - A REAL LIFE COMPARISON - BACK TO BACK AND PS there both great in their own ways!!

Unless of course when the alleged one in twenty IMS bearings fail without warning and your engine is rendered a tenner's worth of scrap.

I'm sure the 996 is a splendid car but I'll take a 3.2 with possible guide/snapped stud problems at 100k miles which won't cause me sleepless nights should they occur.

I'll take my 996.

I prefer it based on looks and price. Only ever been a passenger in a 3.2 though to be fair.

That's rubbish I'm afraid. There are plenty of IB owners enjoying 996 on impactbumpers.com.

Open your mind P50 plenty of positives on both, they each have their unique issues - 3.2 (rust), 996 (engine) - both can be expensive.

996 is a superb car very capable quick in all weathers
Watch this space re the values. Will only go one way.
What people tend to forget when it was launched in the 90's it was a vast improvement on its predecessor the 993, all the neutrals loved it, it was just the air heads that didn't pardon the pun, sure it was made to a budget like all most modern manufacturing. This and the boxter saved Porsche from extinction.
Buy a nice 3.4 C2 now with ambers, good investment IMO especially if it's had the harteck conversion

Re the 3.2 I've had 3 great cars, IMO nicer than the 993 which was probably the most boring 911 i've owned albeit it was a lardy wide bodied one, the C2 narrow body which I have driven was far better.

Two holiday destinations. Marbella or Cote D'Azur.

Both warm. I wouldn't go near Marbella!

The 996 was built on the cheap. I don't like the shape. The engine is dodgy.

I simply don't like them. I like an 80's Aston V8 OI. I don't like the DB7 onwards.

Simples!

Yep. 930 and 996 gt2. If I had to sell one it would probably be the 930.

Both lovely cars in their own right!

My next car was going to be either a 996 Gt3 or Sagaris, loved them both but bought the Sagaris, it just has the wow factor the 996 Gt3 didn't have.

My thread about them both

Agree, a nice 993 in the correct spec is a gem, and an excellent example may well prove to be a wise investment.

But criticism of the 996 is unfair. It moved the '911' to a different level to widen its appeal. And, again, in the right spec - Coupe, Manual, C2 or C4, Sports Seats and, most importantly, PSE - can be a ridiculously good buy.

Having just bought a superb-condition 996 3.6 Carrera 2 with Sports exhaust, sports suspension (and GT3 aerokit), I agree with the OP completely; the 996 is just as good as any other 911. The sound, steering, ride, handling, grunt and looks are just an utter delight to me. I even like the spartan (full-leather) interior; seems more pukka, more race-car, more "Porsche" that way.

I've owned a 996 Turbo and a 944 Turbo before and driven SCs, 964s, 993 Carreras and a 993 Turbo as well. The 996 is just as good as any of them; in fact, for smiles-per-£ it's way better.

I've always thought the 996 design is the most "modern"-looking as well. I'm not a huge fan of the original fried-egg lights, but the Series II/Turbo lights though, are the best looking and most futuristic design of them all, to me. That obviously helps me appreciate the 996 more, but fundamentally I can't think of any 911 I would call anything but desirable or evocative. For anyone to call the 996 "ugly" is unfair; it still has the hips, the wings, the curves, the wings and the overall shape of any 911.

Of course I keep a wary eye on the motor/oil/coolant and £5K in the bank spare (possible because the car was so cheap....), but it has all the poise, noise, handling and special quality of a 911 I could ever want.

All for less than 1/3 of an air-cooled car (which I personally find too old/small, but that's not the market's view).

In time, people will (perhaps have already) come around to the realisation that frequent (6-monthly) oil changes are probably all you need to stop engines going bang and then the true worth of these fantastic cars will become apparent. In the mean-time, I'm extremely happy with my contrarian "investment".

99.9% of the joys of any other 911 for 33% (or less) of the cost of any other variant. Absolute bargain.

Got to say I like the simplicity of the 996 C2. I'd be tempted to add a ducktail!

See you've got the 996 turbo 'GT2 alike' up for sale. What's next?

another vote for the 996 here, someone posted rust vs engine, couldn't agree more.
