I hate sounding like a broken record, but I often do!

I have no doubt that these engineers are close to cracking all of the technical aspects of this challenge. And also that they can make a really good presentation of why this should be put into practice as soon as it is viable.

Thats not my challenge to you. I am saying that this is only the beginning of the project.

Its the next bit thats the big one.

Making it happen.

Funny you should say that. Remember the first back to the future film?

The future date they went to was a few weeks ago....

Get your head around that!
That's the point! All this cars will be driving themselves a week next Tuesday is tosh. Yes vehicles will develop and yes fuel sources will change but I can bet my last pound the vast majority of vehicles driven in 20 years time will NOT be driverless and will be powered mainly by hydrocarbons (for all the plug in overnight brigade, where do you think the electricity comes from?!)

I am fully with you on most of that except 'cue legislation change'! Its not that simple!

We shall see, and I will watch with interest.

Apparently it didn't see the owl coming out of the sun and got eaten whilst rebooting.

I spotted 5 air cooled 911's last Sunday whilst driving trough Kensington, owners happy to park on the street in that borough.

They are still about - I took a Cayman* for a test drive yesterday and arriving back at the dealership in Towcester there was a lovely black late '70s Targa being driven round the back. On the test drive earlier I passed a white 993, a silver 928 and a white 924. On the M1 last Sunday I was overtaken by a stunning dark grey GT3, a real pearler.

(* My first ever drive in a Porsche, I'm smitten and looking at getting in as soon as possible).

White 3.2 Cab seen today in Evesham. In fact Evesham seems to have a bit of a glut of aircooled, though I'd not seen this one before.

Cmoose - is your middle name 'Hal' by any chance? ;-)

Sorry, but 5 yrs my Acensorede.

Massive legal, statutory, safety & financial barriers to overcome before it becomes anything resembling a reality.

Trust me :-)

Funny HAL, I agree with the random guy on the internet, as do a lot more like us.

To answer, will a car be in general use to the spec you claim in 2020, no it will not .

Okay so there will be some more automation on the horizon for sure, car manufacturers need to keep reinventing the wheel to keep mugs like us changing cars every 2 two years (even though the car we leave off at the dealer is still good for another 15 years) but will it lead to chains of cars driving down the motorway with the driver reading the paper no. Why? well for that that theory to work, all cars and drivers in that chain have to want/ be able to partake, will I...no certainly not initially, I drive older cars so can't. Will my 78 year old mum? Most definitely not.

Whilst I generally welcome the advance that the modern world has bought me, I've become rather bored with the demands to change stuff before its time at the behest of the manufacturer and ultimately their shareholders (think phone tech).

good luck in your self driving car whilst my mum is about...and don't fill your starbucks latte frape too high as I think you might spill some on your self cleaning shirt with the late braking required as she toodles into Homebase on OAP Tuesday...or is it B&Q on a Wednesday...oh in fact lets go and see Doreen for a slice of cake...

cmoose I'd ignore all the neigh sayers. I love driving, but see a massive benefit in the new technology and it's amazing how quickly it's moving.

Tempted by another Caterham, so I can enjoy true back to basics driving while we still have the opportunity!

Don't argue with a man who appears to live on these forums. Ask yourself...How sad do you actually need to be to post circa 30,000 times ?.
You know the fella in your local, same place, every night, bar stool...own tankard etc....we have one here...a cyber version.

He's angry about something...everything and anyone who dares challenge his forthright often unstantiated opinions...not quite sure what it is. I'd hazard vertically challenged ?.

Anyhow, that blue 993 is lovely.

Nope you misunderstand, and misquote. I never said that I didn't want change to happen I said I would not initially partake in automated driving solutions as the vehicles I drive do not have the capability, and I tried to give the example of someone who maybe doesn't want to use the latest tech even though its available to them, doe my mum use the facetime function on the ipad I bought her...no. I think that the time frame you seem to work within that these technologies are going to be knocking on the door very soon is incorrect and I was also making the point that these changes are more a way of manufacturers trying to sell you more of what you don't need so keep themselves and their shareholders in clover. I bet you have an apple watch don't you... wink
