Hi there,
I really need some help and this is a pretty niche enquiry. I have just bought a red 911 3.2 sport 1987 coupe and.... it is my pride and joy. Being the sport its got the whale tail which I am taking off complete with the engine lid to tuck away so it can have the more classic understated look for the moment (fear ye not, I am aware of the handling implications).

I have bought the new engine lid with grill with no spoiler on it, with all the bits but - and heres the problem - there is no hole to put my rear wiper fitting. I asked Porsche but they could not give me a precise answer apart from it needs to be fitted through the grill and yet I have seen a blurry photo on the net where it appears to be a hole through the engine lid. If it is on the grill it seems it would be sitting on top of the slats / louvres and would look daft?

Does anyone know the EXACT location where you drill a hole and if possible with photos?

Yours
Anton

PS. I have scoured the internet for 3 weeks and other forums with no luck!

I've done a quick search for "911SC rear wiper" on google images, since the SC came without the whale tail. This is a reasonable shot:

It does appear that it was through the grill!

It fits throught the grille - I am not sure if there are two different grilles.

I ran mine without a wiper
I'd probably do that. Cleaner still.

I have a flat engine lid from my previous 3.2 Carrera.

It has two holes in the lid on the upper side of the grill

One of which would hold the windscreen wider (with the addition of a new spindle onto which the wider mechanism sits). The other hole was capped with a grommit.

If you have bought a lid without holes, you'd be best just taping off the connecting wire (and securing) the cable for the rear wiper and run without one.

Just checked some pictures - my grille had no hole for the wiper so there will be two different types
Thanks Olly - are you sure there are two different types? Porsche seemed to think there was only one grill!

Thankyou for narrowing it down... I am now searching for a closeup pic before I get the drill out!

Your car looks stunning. Do you have or more likely could you get a real close up of where the hole is from both sides of the engine lid?

Yours most gratefully

I have a brand new Porsche flat lid and grill - will post piccies of how they look front and back shortly. Pretty sure you just punch out the pre-defined hole on both parts.

OK, here goes.

New grill as viewed from the inside. No obvious area to be removed.

New lid as viewed from the outside. Tab for the spindle but no hole.

New lid with grill in place.

New lid as viewed from the inside. Reinforced hole for mounting the spindle v visible - just needs to be punched through the sheetmetal.

Might be to get a good look at a flat lid with the wiper in place in you want to go down that route.

Remember you need to buy a special spindle for a flat lid (longer from memory).

The spindle and the related bushing are different between flat lid and whale tail.

Here's a thread worth a read - http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technic...

Thankyou all so much with your exacting responses. You put the Porsche dealership in Swindon to shame (who I bought the car from).

I would go without the wiper, it is to all intents and purposes useless.
