Can't afford a 964 then buy a 993

It takes a big difference in power to make a car noticeably faster. Take a look at how close the three 911's are in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=34VjcplEeMk

I think delivery of the power makes a big difference, so maybe that's the main difference between the 993 and 964, because outright power difference definitely isn't huge on paper.
Different car I know, but my AM Vantage feels slow - put your foot down on a twisty road and there is no urgency at all - and on a straight road, it feels like the acceleration is pretty poor. However - take a glance at the speedo, and it does indeed shift - it just never feels like it does. I'm absolutely sure my Cayenne would get left behind by the Vantage - but it feels like it accelerates quicker.
Absolutely! My Challenge Stradale 'feels' much quicker than my 550 Maranello but on paper there's very little in it.Different car I know, but my AM Vantage feels slow - put your foot down on a twisty road and there is no urgency at all - and on a straight road, it feels like the acceleration is pretty poor. Of course the 993 has six gears to the five in the 964 so maybe that makes a difference to the acceleration. The Varioram in the 285 engines does change the torque characteristic as well and they feel different to the non varioram 993 and 964. To me the non varioram 993 feels very similar in feel to the 964 and has that distinct surge up the rev range so it sort of feels faster than it is. By the time they get going the varioram engine is already on it so it feels more linear.

LOL! Love those old Japenese battle videos. C4ME said:
I have never seen the gear analysis charts for 993 VR, 993 NVR and 964 overlaid on one another.
All sorts of different boxes and ratios in this thread. http://rennlist.com/forums/993-forum/715760-re-gea...I see the latest issue of Total911 has a 964 vs 993 head to head.
"Elsewhere, in the new issue, two of the most popular air-cooled Porsche 911s of all time, the 964 Carrera and its 993 successor go head-to-head in a definitive battle to find the better driver’s car."

Thats quite a u turn! I suppose they have to regurgitate old debates as they have very little content to fill pages. Every successive 911 is better than the one before it from a dynamic perspective. Doesn't always mean its a more desirable car IMO - the 993 is no doubt a v.pretty and desirable car - I still prefer the old school 964 looks."Elsewhere, in the new issue, two of the most popular air-cooled Porsche 911s of all time, the 964 Carrera and its 993 successor go head-to-head in a definitive battle to find the better driver’s car."

Hey Mike. There is a reason Porsche called them Turbo Look. They are not a turbo shell. Ask a body shop that is used to jigging these cars. With the turbo there is a 1/2" spacer that sits where the steering rack mounting points are. The whole shape around that area is completely different. I had to modify my Supersport shell so I know for sure. When you drop the front end on the Supersport to race heights it runs on its bump stops. And voila it handles like a pig. So I had to bite an expensive bullet and modify my car. Remember the basalt black and Carrera gt silver road legal race going SSE. That was mine. They say you learn something new everyday

You have not been able to buy a pre 89 shell from Porsche for an age. Speak to a proper experienced Porsche body shop and they will tell you that I am correct. Your Supersport is turbo look not turbo shell. Once I came across my issue it then made sense why Porsche called them turbo look
Except the one subtle difference is the mounting point of the steering rack. The turbo shell is different to the supersport shell. The supersport is a standard 3.2 Carrera shell with turbo front and rear wings, spoiler of course. Take a look in the classifieds. SSE's are often tractor ride height at the front. Turbo's generally sit lower as they should. Trust me I know. £££'s to sort out and mine was a mint 1989 3.2 SSE as a base
I suspect you did not have a genuine M491 but a wide arched modified Carrera of which there are many. The obvious give away with those is that they needed wheel spacers at the rear to avoid having to change the suspension swing (banana) arms etc.
But hay ho you were happy with what you had and I am happy with what I've got
