My mate has a couple in his workshop now. Crank is shot on one of them. Phoned Porsche to order a new one, part number now changed. They used to be £3200, now £10600 plus VAT . Just check it over carefully.
Wow. That's pretty steep! Are these common failure points? I've never heard of one failing... Jay.. said:

He's done quite a lot over the years. Always number 3 that goes. Age and mileage i guess. Just something to check for really.

Thanks for the advice, certainly something I'll look into. A good PPI should cover that, I imagine? Are you local to the North West? Could pop over and have chat at the workshop if you like.
I'm located in Oxfordshire atm, the furthest North I go for work is Lincoln so I imagine still quite far? Many thanks for the offer!

Yep, doesn't seem that long ago that you could pick up a 964 for under £10k !
10 years ago. I glanced at a couple around that price.. I was about 19 at the time, earning decent money for the time, not a great deal by any means but enough to make me seriously consider taking out a loan and picking one up..It would've been a stupid thing to do, all things considered, but I still kinda kick myself for not taking the plunge as even a ropey example would probably go for double what I'd have paid for it nowadays..
