Have a 997.1 Std Carrera and love it. Mint manual and 50k on the ticker.

Pondering because of the (excessive) hype about the IMS and scoring, that they'll (it) will slowly decline in value (I understand my 2007 3.6 is likely to be unaffected but the reputation according to a few dealers is that this affects gen 1 values vs gen 2). I don't want to make £££s just want to make sure the car isn't a white elephant slowly depreciating when a different choice might not - it is used for 1/2k annually.

Assuming maintenance / running costs of the incumbent or another Porsche are ballpark the same (typically). Options:

1) Keep it and enjoy stop fussing it will hold it's value c £22-25.
2) Trade to 3yr newer 997.2 adding £15 for a Std or £21k for an S - this feels a bit painful as cars appear so similar (I know they're not)
3) Been tempted with £40k 987 Spyder - rare and fun looking, nice drive too - with its' rarity will it stay worth 20% over a std boxster?
4) Also found a really good spotless 993 adding £28k (I have no idea if this is plateauing or likely to appreciate.)

Goal is to continue to have fun, ideally with the car being an asset that at least covers its running costs.

Grateful for any experiences or opinions.

It isn't going to lose money if maintained properly.

The IMS / Bore score crap is just that... warm it up properly, service it properly, LTT and give it some real stick once its warmed. They do not all fail, they will not all fail. The doom mongers are just that.

As for replacing it - what would you get that delivers like a 997.1 - set up right they are properly epic, fast and still very much more iconic that 99% of metal on the road.

plus - the swap you discuss costs more than putting the money away for a rebuild should the worst happen?

you may also pick a newer car up with loads of issues.....? Your car you know, and have looked after I presume based on your post?

I have a 997.1 and I intend to keep it forever - I don't think the costs will drop as a result of this issue personally, and mine has already increased in value (insurance verified with guaranteed value)

Service, warm up, enjoy. Vast majority of 997.1 cars, including S models, are unaffected by bore scoring and, if yours is pre 2007, have an updated IMS fitted when you have the clutch done. Depreciation wise it looks to me as if they have stabilised and are likely to slowly rise in value.

If you really want a change and have an eye on residuals, the 987 Spyder could be a good call. It is a great drive but just be sure you can live with the roof as it's a bit fiddly to put up and down, part and parcel with the car though and all the better for it IMO.

987 Spyder - Cracking car. Great looking, Good to drive, solid residuals, low build numbers.

I have a black 997.1 S. Love it. Had lots of work done under warranty but my gut tells me it is still a good one, I was speaking to an OPC tech and he said I shouldn't worry about bore scoring too much but that's easy for him to say I suppose. In 3 years time it will be 15 yrs old and Porsche may not warranty I (might do as I have kept it with them), will keep it meantime as it is such a great drive and so iconic.

I'd keep it and not let all the scaremongering get to you. Better the devil you know. Plus the extra money to change could go to an engine rebuild - worst case scenario etc.

I owned a 997.1 C2 and it's rawness was its appeal. That car really made me smile.
