Hi all. I'm new here.

On my 993, I'm changing my 18" TT wheels for 17" Cup2, but I don't know what tyres I should use. Some kind of Michelin for sure - but should I go for the Porsche-approved and N-rated PS2 or would the PS4 be better? Road use only. I use the car for my daily drive to work at 6am all year round.

There seem to be 500 billion threads on 18" tyres but nothing on 17".
Thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

Does the change from 18 to 17 inch affect the comparison of PS2 to PS4 significantly?
My 996 on 18s has been on n rated PS2 tyres for a number of years, I recently replaced them with PS4 tyres. Not had them on over a winter to see any difference in cold weather but in warm and hot weather I have convinced myself I can feel a slight improvement in turn in. The ride also feels a little softer and they are definitely quieter but this may be due to comparing new soft rubber to older hardened rubber.
They do not feel hugely different to the PS2 tyres (unlike the contis which I hated). If they last longer and/or have better cold weather performance then that is a bonus.

I’ve just fitted 4 new 17” PS4s to my 993 C2. I’d highly recommend them. And at only £550ish a real bargain.

What sizes does the 993 run on 17. Is it the same as 996 with 205 50 and 255 40?

Yep. Same sizes. I wondered whether PS4 is an update of the n-rated PS2.

Different cars and different tyre sizes etc, but my brand new PS4s on my 993 (with sports suspension) feel a lot better than my old Cayman (with PASM in either mode) that was on brand new N rated PS2s.

Not an ideal comparison but I'd still vote (strongly) for PS4s.

One detail point. There are two versions of the PS4: The 'PS4' and the 'PS4S'. They behave differently, with the 4S being design more for sports cars and spirited / track driving. Last time I checked, the 4S wasn't available in the UK in <19" rim sizes. The 4S effectively replaces the old Pilot Super Sport series.

The PS4 is a definite improvement the PS3 that it replaces, however the PS3 was actually a step back in many ways (less grippy) from the PS2......

Yes I believe the PS4S shares the fancy carcass of the Pilot Super Sport which is what made it so wonderful. Disappointing though as the Pilot Super Sport was available in 18 sizes and the PS4S is not.

I changed the 18 wheels on my 996 to 17 but I have to admit being annoyed that I could still buy 18 Super Sport tyres and I can not buy 17 Super Sport tyres AND the 17 size tyres are sometimes slightly more expensive than the 18 sizes forcing me to constantly 2nd guess this decision.

Correct PS4S not available only PS4. Very different. I have a new set of PS4 for winters and its no better than average. Fine for pottering about in but you really wouldn't want to lean on them in a meaningful way IMO.

Thanks folks. I think 17” is the limiting factor for the sportier tyres.
No one has suggested that PS4 are better than PS2 so I’m going for the N-rated PS2. About £550 fitted seems OK to me.

(I only wish the HVAC was so simple to resolve)

I have 17 PS3 on my 996 and another set with PS2 on in the lock up. I've not tried swapping them yet. I'm too lazy to operate the jack.

I have :-)

PS4's are a more advanced tyre with a more advanced rubber compound, I would seriously consider these rather than decade old technology used in the PS2's. I've only ever fitted PS2's on previous Porsches due to warranty restrictions.

I’ve just moved from SO 2A to PS2s . Tyre tech is great going for the latest thing but PS2s came out years after my 993 was built so it’s still a more modern tyre than was around when the car was designed and built.....

I also like the fact they are recommended by Porsche . They are imo a far better tyre than the SO 2A but the best tyre imo of all time was the late great SO 2 for old skool Porsche. ..... sadly missed.
