I would say the targa today is the most complex ever. Heaviest ever. It was created as a design piece more than serving any other need.

The original targa came from US law and accidentally became an icon. A porsche sales person came up with the name (I believe).

The targa was always a convertible with bits added, then the 993 and 996 they decided to do something purposeful... it didn’t work and they dropped it.

Then it came back purely for design and marketing in the 991.

Someone may have said all this or will come along and correct so sorry if I’ve got it wrong, but this is my memory.
I had a 996 Targa - great for getting 2 sets of golf clubs and 2 holdalls in the back via the hatch rear window. Much worse for my back to do the same in my current 997 GTS!!

The pointy back window on the 993 targa is it’s most alluring feature
Those f cking hideous conversions are the sad affectations modellings aspirations of misguided individuals with poor taste.
I’d gladly smash them to smithereens with a selection of demolition contractors tools.
Then p ss on the mangled detritus for free

Just sayin....

Not too bad O/C

The 993 is a convertible shell with a plastic roof
Given a chance I’d have a go at making a speedster out of one.
Yeah, yeah, it’s impossible.
Yeah?
Well it isn’t.

As I said, the pointy back window on the 993 Targa is awesome

The offer of my previous post stands.

Looks very interesting, my wife’s just said, “Oo £85K - how much should you sell yours for!”
Yes it was expensive to build (the Speedster) 11 years ago, and Marc Clowes who used to be partners in 9M is still building them now.
He’s got a std /narrow bodied car in build at his place now, complete with RS adornments and a rather wicked 3.8 motor! Going Stateside so wont be seen on our roads.
As for my car; it gets used too infrequently TBH but not planning on parting with it any time soon!
Graham.

What a brilliant, brilliant car (and thread!), I absolutely loved it. I missed out on a 964 targa to speedster conversion years and years ago (speed yellow from Marbella IIRC) and your build seriously made me look into building a speed yellow 993 narrow body.

Then life got in the way, almost bought a 964 America Roadster as a stop gap but now even those have gone crazy money.

One thing I will say about the crazy prices now, it's a good thing for all those guys off the forums from years ago who did it for the love of the cars back then, now they're probably worth what they actually cost or more!
