is the targa body as 'loose' as cab?
I know 4 star are 'expensive'. how much too much is this?

Very underrated cars now imho, especially as a classic and the type of driving that classic may encounter.
The roof’s do occasionally throw a wobbler however there are specialists out there who know what they are doing-keeping the mechanism tight and we’ll lubricated where needed is key I’d imagine.
Porsche only fitted them with 17” wheels and standard suspension if I remember correctly so there was obviously concerns about the structure (which is identical to the cab) flexing and causing issues to the roof-back in the day, lowering springs and 18” wheels were considered a no no.
I looked at a few around 10+ years ago, there were always a good few low mileage examples out there in some great period colours but I never ended up buying one.
There was usually a fairly chunky roof mechanism service bill in the file (thought a selling point) with all of them-think around £2-2.5k whee one of the owners had had a cable snap and it was time to go through it all.
If you have a local specialist who knows the roof, I’d factor in it having a once over every few years and just keep on top of it-most will now be cherished classics now and babied/garaged accordingly. When I was looking although special, they did tend to be more just older sports cars and left outside etc.

The roofs all rattle and the lines of the car are compromised. Not a pretty as the coupe, which everyone actually wants. On the plus side it’s lovely and airy inside on account of that glass roof.
I completely disagree. The whole point of the 993/6/7 Targa is that it does keep the original teardrop roof line of the coupe (as opposed to the original Targa which had a flat roof and the cab which did too).
You loose the shape of the rear side window but visually that's less important. The key signature design detail of the 911 (and going back to the early gmund cars before it) is that teardrop from the front windscreen down to the rear bumper, in all of the air cooled models (and some later ones) that was compromised in the open top versions due to the mechanisms needing a flat roof panel.
Re the suspension, mine had the M030 option (lowered sports) which was absolutely fine ride wise.
The roof only threw one wobbly, but after a bit of Googling…and some head scratching I managed to fix it, just a clip that had sprung loose.
I fitted a Dansk stainless exhaust system which also transformed the car, made it feel ‘beefier’ somehow.
Brilliant car, would have another one if I had the garage space..

I think we’ll have to agree to disagree on that chap, that rear side window shape is a huge part of the 911’s visual DNA, and it’s bdisation impacts massively on the car’s aesthetics, just as the hardtop on an E46 M3 does. The whole point of the 993/6/7 Targa is that it does keep the original teardrop roof line of the coupe (as opposed to the original Targa which had a flat roof and the cab which did too).

Do you want a Targa? Go and look, though a new engine in 2010 (explains the missing 'cosmoline') and a 14k GBP 'refresh' would make me look hard at the condition under the new? paint and polish. Have a close look at the driver's front wing where it meets the sill. Might just be my poor eyesight I know 4 star are 'expensive'. how much too much is this?

Otherwise I'd hold out for a coupe.
PS I've not seen that much 'prose' layered into a car advert since the 1950s.
A couple of mates have run 993 Targa's for over 15 years...both love them but both have had roof issues. One kept his outside for a few years which I don't think helped. The owner of that car that was key outside has looked at having a high quality glass out respray done but the quotes have been astronomic because of the issues of taking the roof out....he's been advised that if he does that he'll probably end up having to replace a lot of the parts.
So buy one with immaculate paint !
Personally I think you'd have to really. really want the Targa because of the extra potential hassle. I've got an old 911 which I wish didn't have a sunroof....I never use it partly because I am worried it might get stuck in the open position !
