If a cracked manifold is left on the engine then there is a danger that it will damage the small catalytic converter that is inserted in the manifold itself (called the pre-cat). If the pre-cat breaks up then there is a danger that small bits are sucked into back a cylinder during the valve overlap.

Additionally (and applicable to many other cars), a cracked manifold can let air into the exhaust system. This will fool the Lambda into thinking the engine is running lean and tells the Motronic to add more fuel. Running rich can wash the oil off the bores and lead to cylinder liner damage. Fuel can even get past the rings and into the sump which dilutes the oil (very common on diesel engines with leaky injectors).
Beware Mk1 manifolds and pre-cats!! https://m18eut.wordpress.com/f430-engine-rebuild/
