hi everyone, just got a report back on a car that i have put a deposit down on a few things need sorting and am trying to get a steer on how much they will cost to put right as i would imagine that these are the sort of things that have been fixed before as they are knocking on in terms of years.....

any help appreciated....

so the list....

- holes in hood where its worn away so it needs a new hood, also rattles a bit
- drivers seat doesn't move forward as it should when taking roof down
- door mirror not working
- dash shrinkage, apparently its a dash out job?
- passenger airbag baggy and wrong colour....

Why would we know?

Surely the person conducting the inspection can give an indication of remedial costs?

Most of it sounds like something a trimmer could sort out. The dash and airbag cover isn't overly complicated. Circa £1500 would sort it out - not too sure on the cost of new hood skin.
The seat probably needs a new potentiometer which is a common 355 issue.

Well red duke mainly because I thought as these were normal issues in these cars that some one would have done the work......

And no, people who do ppi's quite often aren't mechanics so don't know the cost of parts and labour so can't tell you the cost of putting things right, but thanks for your help with this lol

Cheers Evo I put down £1500 for the dash, any idea how much the petentiometer would be at an Indy? I have managed to have a chat with one Indy and then reckon £10k for the lot?....

I wouldn't trust anyone who wasn't a mechanic and who could give you a guide to rectification costs to perform a PPI on one of these. There are many well documented and potentially ruinous pitfalls that need to be avoided...

I had dash shrinkage on my 550 and sure people could have done a cheap bodge up but I wanted a proper job as good as or better than new which meant completely retrimmed dash, cost me £3500.

the firm who inspected it was recommended to me by rardleys who look after my 456, the car isn't for sale with rardleys by the way.....so i would hope that they would know what they were doing...... but i know what you mean cerberaherts......

i thought that the car would come back clean as its lowish miles 25k, good service record etc etc and its top money (i think) there are some wear and tear stuff which is fine but the bigger items i think are a little worrying.... i need to see what they come back with before i decide what to do

the guy who did the inspection said that it drove well etc and mechanically was in good nick

If you use Rardleys (and presumably trust them) why not get a quote for the work and use that to either get the work done before you buy or adjust the price as you know what your cost will be.

Suggest you speak to Cerberaherts himself. His prices are very reasonable and standard of work is better than any other Ferrari indie I have used in the past 20 years.

A few other owners have had bits like this done, fortunately in 10 years mine hasn't needed anything like this so here goes :

New hood c. £4k plus alignment which whilst isn't difficult can take between 1 and 10 hours, depends on how lucky you are !!

- drivers seat doesn't move forward as it should when taking roof down : Could be control box ? does seat move forward normally ?

- door mirror not working : £1k

- dash shrinkage, apparently its a dash out job? : YEs it is, they should do dash and airbag cover at same time c. £4-5K

- passenger airbag baggy and wrong colour.... As above

These prices are if you want it doing properly so £10k -£12k ish to get it right or they can probably bodge it for £5-6k

Assuming its a good one C. £100k 10% fixes don't seem too bad

If it was me I would walk !! Or take £15k off the price

hi Philb,

thats really helpful mate, exactly what i needed..... i have also come to the same conclusion as you

it was top money for me to buy which i was happy to pay if it was all tip top, but these bits are pretty expensive to sort....

i will drop cerb a line to double check but its looking like the search will continue as i dont think that they will see it my way but you never know.... if anyone knows of a blue spider let me know :-)

Have owned a F355 for 5 years, I'd like to concur with the other guys that have been posted on here already. When buying buy the best you can, buying something that needs putting right will cost so much more than you imagine, and that's assuming you can still find the part and have the work done satisfactorily. To put a tatty one right will cost you more than a tidy one in the long run.

The only expensive item there is a replacement hood but none of these sound like a reason to walk away from a decent car!

£1k to fix an inoperable wing mirror ?! It's probably something a good auto electrician could fix for £100 no bodging required!

Same with a good leather re-trimmer, I bought a 355 carbon seat that was re-trimmed by a guy that kits out private jets and it the quality is stunning, leather grain perfectly matched, beautifully stitched and it cost around £600. Far more complex than re-trimming the dash so I'd be expecting to pay much less than £5k for a quality job.

The above are all minor wear items and can be sorted. 1k to fix a mirror, I think not...

So long as the car is mechanically sound, minor wear and tear items like that would not put me off. Don't buy a complete dog, but expect to spend a small sum (not 10k!) to put the above right.

I suspect that as these go up (if they go up anymore, who knows) they will be bought by people with a different mind set. When I bought mine many years ago it was at the max of my budget and I would have done most things to save a few quid here and there.

Probably would have done the mirror myself (some how) have done my roof myself many times, it has taken me hours (20/30 hours) to get it right, now it just takes me a couple of hours every spring to set it up right.

However now as life has moved on and things have got really busy time is the issue. So if I am spending £100k on a car I want it to be right from the off or I want a sizable chunk off so I can just throw it at my independent and say fix it, its such a hassle if you work miles from home 6 days a week. Actually these days I just want it right from the off !!

Or alternatively I wouldn't be spending £100k on one that needed work I would be spending £80k and getting the work done.

I know too many horror stories on 355's when people have bought a cheap one and then regretted it / thought 355's were rubbish as they had to spend so much getting the problems put right. The should have just bought a decent one from the off.

I used to enjoy playing with cars fixing bits here and there .... I had TVR's

Mine had bills for probably £50k before I bought it and had all the major bits sorted.

I think that you will also find that as these have gone up so much now that Ferrrai parts / (some) specialists have put their prices up.

As for a mirror costing £1k the only on I can find is a used one for £500 for the part, plus fitting ? probably not far off £1k

If you can do some of it yourself that great, I just can't / wouldn't want to mess about with mine, taking the seat out fills me with dread thinking of all the things I would probably break !!

phil you are man after my own heart..... couldn't agree with you more mate.... i have asked them to knock £12500 off but understandably they aren't keen but i have neither the time or the know how to be getting out the spanners......

i too had tvrs but i was in my mid twenties and could live with it annoying habits.... couldn't do that these days.... lol

Out of interest and more as a general question than a specific: would a car such as this be acceptable with this work done for the money ie the mirror might just be a loose wire shouldn't this be basic pre-delivery prep rather than an excuse to chip substantially - I believe the airbag cover issue can be seen in their photos just below where the text praises the fit but nonetheless is it reasonable to try to negotiate for its correction to be included as part of a deal ?
