For what it's worth I don't expect there to be an actual physical detriment to the car if an annual is missed and the car is stored in a good environment, but conversely I don't want to shoot myself in the foot at this stage when I could just find a different car.
When I was looking I didn't want cars that had been stored. I wanted a car that had been doing a good 2-3k miles per year as I think its better for the car than being laid up.

Some of the cars I'm calling about have three year gaps.
That would have been too much for me. My first thought would be they are running it on a budget and may be scrimping on maintenance.

Its so funny to hear dealers tell you that multiple year service gaps doesnt affect value at all because the car didn't do much mileage in that period..... were you selling to the dealer with that same car though, well get ready to bend over because "oh le horreur'... its virtually unsaleble all of a sudden unless you basically give the car away to them !!!

During my own seaech I was relatively pragmatic about it as long as the condition and overall servicing of the car was reflected in the price.... as it happened the car I bought is one of the exceptions with 10 stamps in 10 years, and a large file documenting every service invoice and MOT its ever had... just what you want to see as a private buyer and certainly worth a premium to car without.

Mine's a 2006 with FULL main dealer service history, like you mention it takes ages and ages to trawl though all the red herrings and whilst I agree with the pragmatic views mentioned (which I considered several times) I'm pleased I held out until I found one with perfect history, not that I think the car is better than some of the others I saw but as has been mentioned, the market perceives it as better provenance.

Two at the moment, yes, but not for long.

The new one is a one owner 2008 car with FFSH - serviced every year. I'm away backpacking for three weeks in Feb so it's being delivered on the 27th. Can't wait.

Is anyone else looking at the moment? I'm changing mine and finding that most cars I call about have gaps in the history.

My car has been serviced annually regardless of mileage and also at the mileage intervals, which is the prescribed way, but I've yet to call about a car with 'full history' (including main dealer history) that actually has a 'correct' full history.

Is this common or have I just come across a glut of this type of car?
Or a glut of commonsense? Can anyone argue that a service is needed every 12 months when many cars dont even do 2 k miles in a year? And when its highly unlikely that any main dealers staff do tge full service with real care anyway?
Personally I am a great deal more uneasy about cars which have had a new owner every year since its in the nature of things tgat any new owner is more likly to push the envelope at first, and maybe just before chopping in.

cashing in the manual car! - I cant blame you!
I went F1 this time as I knew frankly there isn't enough of a difference in the experience to pay the crazy cost.

you can have a manual m3 v8 for the cog changing experience and guess what - the manual m3s are cheaper!

Of course its a nonsense. We are the only country in Europe which does this. I've bought Ferrari's in Germany and Holland, at Ferrari Main Dealers, with so-called 'gaps' in the SH (usually that means a service every 2 years/few thousand KM.)

They are genuinely perplexed when I question it - 'but Ze car only deed vun zouzand keelomeeterz, vy change ze oil you crazey Eengleesh guy!' And Germany is one of the homes of automotive engineering!

So its with gritted teeth that I get these cars serviced every year.....

The 2008 cars had a metal trim strip there in place of the usual rubber/plastic. Most are gloss black but a few are silver. I'm not a fan of it on a red car, so I shall have it painted gloss black.
