Thanks for the information, as you say nothing necessarily wrong with the car but it needs to be confirmed good really rather than not confirmed bad.

Nope, I've been looking at various cheap 458s for a while now and scratching around the 120k bottom end thinking maybe make allowances but for 20-30k more I can get into a proper RHD with solid history that's actually knowable and it's worth that extra for peace of mind and no potential disappointments once I've owned it a few months.

  • If* I can't afford a nice one -- that's an indication that I can't afford one at all.

This is exactly where I ended up.

There is one on ebay for 100K, private sale, LHD. Has all the services from France etc. It does seem a good buy at 100K.

It does seem that way. Good link thanks. Maybe a drive out over Christmas called for!

This rear parking brake failure? Likely to be an expensive / well known fault? I know the car's cheap but it'd be nice not to have to pay out thousands on day 1 smile

You're into a bill on day 1 anyway as it needs a service

Having said that the reason so many of the posts have said 'inspect' is so that you are made fully aware of the EPB issue (and any other error) and their possible consequences both technical and financial by someone experienced in that type of car

The EPB could be as simple as a low battery / lack of use issue - but it may not....

this one looks pretty good - kinda UK spec in terms of colours - racing seats, LEDs, warranty and at an official dealer. Might be worth a look

Having said that, in the same position I would take a close look at these

Just my opinion.
I would try and beg steal or borrow the extra £20-25K and get a uk right hand drive car.

Know someone who runs a supercar indy. They say, 9 times out of 10, the initially-cheap cars ultimately end up costing the same price as the fully-priced cars. They typically undergo faster depreciation (cheap begets cheap), often need more repairs (cheap for a reason), lower-end buyers at the top of their budget struggle to afford the best parts or labour, and they are ultimately harder to resell.

Better to be patient and save a bit longer for a proper-price one.

I think the colour combo inside may not be to everyone's taste which may inhibit resale enthusiasm, as will LHD. Also, the spec is not as described. It doesn't seem to have a carbon driving zone/led's or a carbon centre bridge and the racing seats are not fully electric (or obviously Daytona) which causes me to wonder about the familiarity with the model of the seller. I would regard the led's as a very desirable option I have to say. Mileage is quite high also, not a huge problem, but if you add all those things together it may be an issue for resale. That being said, it is advertised at what seems a reasonable price in today's market (and I'm sure there is some slack) and if you want a 458 for a few years after which things will have evened out, this may be one of the cheapest ways to get one - if the s/h stacks up and you get it inspected at an F dealership. LHD means it has some kind of non UK history so you'd need to investigate that with even more rigour. Service deal will have expired now also so you are on your own.

The 458 is an awesome car and fundamentally it is the same car whether it is a 2010 LHD or a 2015 RHD with all the spec ticked off on your personal bucket list. But be careful not to be overwhelmed with enthusiasm for the basic product such that you gloss over disadvantages. Good luck!
Sage advice there. +1

Absolutely fine. I'm always puzzled given the enormous spread dealers are creaming off 100k+ cars why so few people strike private deals. Especially with forums like this where cars and characters are often well known over time in the "community".
Finance, for one. People with the means to buy these cars may well have better uses for the capital, so dealer financing is a major plus.

There is also the perception of security in buying from a dealer. Some of it is illusory (I remain unconvinced that main dealer techs or staff are automatically more enlightened than anywhere else just because the dealership has big glass windows), but from personal experience Ferrari will treat you differently if you buy privately vs a main dealer even if your car has their extended Power warranty. But there is certainly peace of mind value in being able to shout at an established legal entity with a big building you can walk into whenever you want.

There is also the issue of the usual grief one can experience selling privately. When I sold my 458 back to the dealer they collected it and deposited the full balance in my account instantly. I didn't even have to leave the house. That has value to a busy individual.

Ultimately the dealers know that at this end of the market they have you by the balls. The fact there are so few cars for sale privately it testament to the fact that it is just easier to know going in that you're more than likely going to have to consider selling back to the network and suffer the spread. Dealers love this state of affairs because they get two bites of the cherry - when they sell a car to you at a premium main-dealer-with-warranty price, and when they buy it back from you.

You'll probably need to find around £135k to get a decent (early) car privately.

I went to look at the 458 at My Next Car a few months ago, the dealer's premises is a car lot on the side of the A1 but he also has a unit in Clapham, Bedford where the high end cars are kept. Visually the car looks good, panel fit etc is fine and I'm not an expert but I couldn't see any sign of paint repair. I drove the car and it drives very well however there were a few things that put me off, I asked the dealer if he was prepared to drop his price and he immediately offered me £5K off without any haggling, ie he seemed keen to move the car on, secondly the chassis area in the engine bay was full of sand, when I questioned this I was told the car had come in from Dubai and he showed me the paperwork. My concern was the quantity of sand and no matter how good the air filters are if there is that amount of sand some of the particles are going to get into the engine. The car also didn't sit quite flat when I looked at the car, this may have been an optical illusion or the due to the ground it was on but personally before buying I would have it up on a ramp and check all the suspension points.
(I have since been told by somebody else that they believe this car is a Cat D although I have no proof or personally seen any damage on the vehicle)
I would suspect you could buy this car for £110K if you wished.
After quite a lot of searching I eventually bought a Grigio 458 Italia from Top 555 in Oakham, the car has only done 9000 miles, is in excellent condition with all the accessories like charger, tool kit, cover etc. They have also given a 12 month warranty as opposed to the 3 month for the previous mentioned car. I paid £124K for the car and have been hugely impressed with Top 555 as a company, I dealt with Charles who is one of the directors and he has been superb sorting out the deal.

That's beautiful. I'm starting to move away from red/crema now. Seems a couple of nice dark silvery colours.

Grigio silverstone,I think it is more subtle and less in your face than Rosso, a bit more sophisticated.
