I know a lad who has been playing the Ferrari game for a while now. He has bought at least 10 cars from the same dealer over a 3 year period worth around £2.5m - he did this so that he eventually gets offered the special editions - so what happened? Well he didn't get one laugh

On the other hand there are a handful of guys on Instagram who seem to be able to buy every single special edition car available from Ferrari and Porsche or McLaren! They are openly posting about these cars and I think it is these kind of individuals that these manufacturers now favour! Sad but true! - No big social media presence - no car!

Gee there re some tales of woe coming out of the woodwork with Ferrari now. A lot of disgruntled and rightly so pi55ed off people.
What was this "build one less than demand" ethos all about, are they actually building any at all as some big hitters not even getting a call back has got to grate.
If you are quick I suppose you could always go and buy a Lamborghini Huracan Performante just to piss them off. Must admit if I had been turned down that's what I would of done just to shove it up em, not that they give a toss but at least it would give me some satisfaction

I did just that. Not sure if anyone was at the Silverstone track day yesterday but someone was lapping a HP and it sounded incredible. It was louder to my ears than the Ferrari race cars and had blue flames out of the exhaust on overrun. Very excited to get into one.

The way the market is going I can see a lot of overly optimistic would-be flippers getting burnt on the Pista. If that happens it might be possible for us mere morals to get into one at/below list price.

Just noticed this thread going. Repost from main pista thread:

My personal experience. Had 4 Ferrari’s all from same main dealer including 2 ‘special series’ cars, one of which was a speciale that was my first new Ferrari (you could indeed just walk in and order such a car 4 years ago). I have a very good relationship with the dealer spanning over 4 years, have always used their service facilities and traded my cars back to them.

I had my name on the list for the new 488(now pista) 2 years ago and have regularly popped in the dealership (5/6 times a year).

Was told recently told Ferrari have to approve all the names on the list even though this isn’t a LE car. My dealer will be getting at least 30 cars..... I have been told that I will not be getting a car! Demand is so high for vehicle and i didn’t score enough points (forgot to buy the obligatory GTC4 lusso)

Times have changed since the Speciale for sure!

Personally I'm not in the least pissed off. I just can't be bothered to play the game. As you know, as we've discussed it before, I don't subscribe to the 'latest is best' nor 'more power is better' philosophies. If I did I couldn't own classics because by those views, their newer descendants would be better cars. They aren't. So not getting one doesn't bother me really.

It would piss me off if I didn't hold those views though but to focus your attention solely on Ferrari, even Porsche, as culprits in this game is wrong. You yourself said you bought your 650 and 570 in order to get a better chance of getting the next LT. You're by no means guaranteed. Even McLaren are at it and they're relative newcomers.

I get as much enjoyment out of a 20k car as I do the latest and greatest so as the kids say, 'meh'.

Instead I'm lusting after a 2007 XJR Portfolio in the PH classifieds. The deal is, if I want it, I give the dealer cash, and you won't believe this, he sells me the car. Wtf!?!?
Pfft! It'll never catch on.

Ha. Crazy idea eh. I've no more space and can't bring myself to sell anything but I do like it. Great car, no stupid games to buy.

I can only justify owning 1 ferrari, my history (all with the same dealer and supplied new then part ex'd with the same dealer) 430, 458,458 spec

I drive my cars, I hoped to get a 488 'vs' and I'm disappointed but meh, it's my fault for not putting enough car photos on instagram - I feel more sorry for those who bought cars they didn't actually want because of dealer 'hints' that it'd help them land this car.

We don't know the list price yet but its going to be circa £325k+ for a decent spec for sure. Ferrari will no doubt insist on heavily optioned cars, finance etc just to wring the last drop of blood ( PROFIT ) out of everyone.

Based on the apparent demand even in a cooled market a limited car like this will still attract a heavy premium unless they seriously inflate and overcook the price in the first place.

Lamborghini Huracan Performante and £100k cashback Sir, that will do nicely IMHO. Cant beat a big, awesome sounding naturally aspirated engine in a Supercar

Can't disagree with Rambo's last paragraph. I would extend that to the huge back catalogue of great cars available on PH's classifieds. Given few will drive any car to its limit, track or road, the actual benefits of the latest and greatest LE car from any manufacturer, beyond cock waving, are limited.

Oh I binned any common sense when it comes to buying cars years ago. It has no place in our lives mate.

I would be just as excited taking delivery of that as I would an LaF. Bizarre. I think I'm a bit strange maybe.

I know what you mean, I love my 10k Clio RS at least as much (and some days more) than any more expensive car. currently spending way more time than healthy looking at vintage muscle cars with crazy engines, next week it will be TVRs again or old hatchbacks or pick up trucks ..... too many cars I want and too little money (and space or time).... keeps me busy though at all times

Amazed at what Ferrari and Porsche customers will put up with. Think there may be some masochistic element to it. Enjoy having their nipples clamped on the weekend, that kind of thing.

Know someone who worked for one dealer, not far from a famous racetrack, until a few months ago. He said some blokes would be close to tears or start ranting when informed they were not on the list for a special edition. They would often put the calls on loud speakerphone, so everyone in the office could have a listen and a good old laugh.

The whole thing is a bit of a game I have to agree, but it’s simply a consequence of supply and demand.

My dealer was saying he’s had people going berserk.

Anyway, epic looking thing and looking forward to it

if true that's rather pathetic of them.

re: masochism - I don't think that's the case at all, you're cornered by porsche and ferrari (luckily the non-ltd edition cars are very good) and some aren't ready to switch to Mclaren/lambo

We are a strange species.

For the past few years we have to listen to everyone banging on about Naturally Aspirated engines. It’s almost something everyone on PH and Youtube has to say in order to meet the minimum requirements of “true petrolheadness”.”Turbo charging is not the same” , “NA is better” and yet everyone and his stepchild has a hard on for the special version of a turbo charged engine?! So what is it to be? It’s either the opportunity to own a car for free because of he instant uplift in price - or turbo charging is irrelevant.

It’s all very amusing.

For me it's not turbo charging in itself but more where modern cars are going. I'm a bit lost for buying new cars tbh as I know I don't need anything faster than I have for the road. As I track with some friends and already have the right car for that I look at what is being released this year as road cars, the cost to change and think, "What's the point?" if I'm honest.

It could be asked, "Why did you buy the cars you have though as they're too powerful for road cars really?" but that was just what was current when I had the opportunity to start buying supercars. I know they're more than enough for road use but that's what the new supercars were when I was buying and I guess I had to buy them to realise they're more than enough.

First time I've ever felt like that. Supercars just seem to be getting more and more powerful and it's utterly pointless, I can't use all of what I already have on the road. I'm not interested in cruising through town in the 'latest thing' nor being 'Mr Newest LE car' at meets. I've come to the conclusion I may as well use the money I would spend getting the maximum enjoyment out of what I already have so it'll be going on road trips, track days and racing and not new cars. I'm a bit concerned I might be turning into an old git.
