My experience was the opposite. As soon as I fixed the problem with the ECU, you'd never have known there was anything wrong. Maybe I did an ECU reset? (as in disconnect battery overnight and relearn). I certainly didn't need a diagnostic reader, as I've never managed to get one to work. Or maybe a running change...

I had a 5.2, traced fault to a dodgy connection on wiring to cat ecu module. Once it thought it was above 2nd threshold temperature (bank of cylinders shutdown, slowdown light on solid) had to be unlocked by dealer diagnostics, no matter what I did.
