AV Engineering now turned their attention to the gearbox. I felt it was worth spending some hours taking the cassette out of the casing and having a good look around given the mileage it has covered.
When the gearbox was inspected originally on removal, Aldous found a slight oil leak from the plug. Now that it’s apart it has become apparent that somebody, at some stage, have over torqued the plug, destroying the thread.. old silicone was smothered all around it in an attempt to seal it.
You can see on the photo below how the plug actually sits at an angle because of the destroyed thread!

The correct solution is to try and helicoil a new thread into the casing and AV are now attempting to do just that.
In terms of the actual gear cassette itself, it is apparently in remarkably good condition given the 105,000 miles and requires nothing! Phew! Clearly ‘one careful owner’ hehe

Attention has been turned to the engine bay which obviously had signs of wear and tear after 105,000 miles:

Stripped and painted frame, its starting to look like a new car:

Great thread and very interesting.

Do we know how the damage occurred to that bevel gear on the oil pump?

It appears that you are perhaps paying the price for some poor work previously carried out on the car. Obviously without naming and shaming, are you aware of who may have done this (particularly the incorrect R M seal)? Who previously serviced the car - seemingly well recommended indi's? I assume you haven't used a main dealer for some time, given the age and mileage of the car.
We can only really attribute the bevel gear damage to metal fatigue/factory parts issue or wear and tear. The oil pump has never been touched or opened.

Yes I know exactly who put the incorrect R M seal on the car unfortunately.. an independent ‘specialist’ COUGH, whom I won’t mention here.

I've been following this thread with interest and yesterday I had the chance to have a good look at your engine and box, along with your lovely car at AV when I dropped our 360 off for its service and a few bits.

As a fellow owner it's really interesting to see the innards of the heart of the car, also to know your car's in safe hands. I bet you can't wait to get it back smile
Thank you, that’s kind of you to say. From the recent AV photos it definitely looks like they’re doing a tremendous job leaving no stone unturned. I must make a trip down to see the guys soon.
Its been odd not having the car around after 17 years of companionship and I’m looking forward to getting her back and parking her up next to her Granturismo half sister spin

More updates from AV.
The oil tank black crackle paint had flaked, and tbh it needed some tlc. I had been meaning to ask Aldous if we could repaint it but hadn't got round to it.
I needen't have worried.. before I could point it out I received this photo!

What attention to detail.

The engine and rear bumper heat shields had taken a battering over the past 20 years as can been seen below. Once again, and before I could ask, the team at AV had already set out refurbishing them..

The engine has now made its way down from the first floor engine room to the workshop, ready to be slotted back in.

In case anyone is wondering, the paint on the car is still the original Maranello paint job (apart from the front bumper which has been resprayed a couple of times)

This then brings us full circle - note the exposed crank and the correct rear main seal ready to be fitted!

...and now fitted!

That’s an excellent idea.
AV Engineering are actually making a full report documenting the engine build but I guess it would be nice to do my own with photos as per my thread here.
Thank you for the suggestionthumbup

Fantastic thread...awesome..thank you for sharing... . We just need to get the message through to Ferrari spares dept : get your prices down to more reasonable and the brand will be admired a lot more ! £6500 for a spare crankshaft, no, £2000 is plenty....??
Thankfully I didn’t need a crankshaft in the end thanks to AV and Hill Engineering thumbup

I received the latest AV update last night at 9 PM. Looks like the boys at AV Engineering are working long hours!
New flywheel is in, new clutch and new 6 bolt ring gear. My car still had the old 3 bolt ring gear which was updated in 2001/2002 as they were prone to failing and subsequently chewing everything up inside the bell housing and gearbox housing.. another lucky escape given the mileage! I’ve had several new clutches but nobody replaced the outdated ring gear assembly..

You will recall issues with the gearbox oil plug earlier in this thread.. somebody had over torqued it and rectified their mistake by using silicone to seal the plug..
Ed and Aldous just successfully helicoil’ed the gearbox casing.. bravo clap

The chaps at AV have been putting some long days in and the gearbox is now back together and fitted. We’re getting ever closer to first start up

A brilliant read and I don’t normally get to involved with this kind of thing but I found it very interesting.

A V have been amazing with me and my Lambo Gallardo Spyder and I’d much rather do a longer journey to see them than anyone else.
Thanks Adz. Used to have a 430 didn’t you if I remember correctly?
