My reference to values, was just the factual observation that almost all modern supercars have turbos and yet command significant premiums over the lovely 458.

So no generally people don’t prefer NA. That would be my conclusion. Just my opinion.

I was responding to the gentleman’s opinion that asserted “generally people prefer NA”.

I just don’t agree with him. I believe it has become a psychological hangup for some people. NA delivers power differently, which some people prefer. But that’s it. It’s subjective but definitely not objectively better.
I think traditionally enthusiasts prefer N/A and that's a fair statement to make

the f40 is of course an exception just like many other cars are

(i'd personally prefer an f50, not that it makes much diff)

I was on the motorway one sunny afternoon with the windows down, a convoy of nice cars came passed, of which were a few ferraris, One of the best sounds was from a 458, theres was a black 488 amongst them however the sound that made was disappointing if I’m honest.

If I were in the market for either, it would certainly be the 458, the fact they are similar in cost despite model age tells all

"Significant premiums" vs the 458 ?

You mean like much newer turbocharged peers such as the 650s or 720s or 991 turboS or db11 for instance - All of which are worth less (or similar-ish for 720) than the considerably older 458? The 488 is now close to parity - where is that significant premium?

You may prefer turbocharged and thats fair enough - but the market is pretty clear about its view.

I was offered a launch spec 488 spider with 10000 miles for £150K, so it won’t be long before the 488’s are below the 458 IMO ( apples for apples ) spec mileage etc

I sold my 2013 458 and quickly regretted it and decided to try a 488. Ignoring the noise/turbo bit what I found was a car that was highly desirable to own but not to drive. It was effortlessly quick but with zero drama and little emotion. I was left totally unelated on 30 min test drive...no drive of a supercar should leave you feeling that way.

I searched for the lowest mileage, newest 458 and bought it a week later. It’s a total event driving it..

Well for anybody wondering I have been watching the 458 market more than daily for months

There have never been as few cars as there are today. There are 10 spiders and 10 Italias. In the dealer network. There were 26 italias when I looked this time a year ago . There are 90 on auto trader which dropped to 83 this week, however it was 100 and somthing most of last year .

Prices high and they are still shifting cars. The sticky ones are the wrong colour and miles/ price . Especially in the dealer network . I would love the silver spider it has ever piece of spec I want. If it was red I would have but a silver Ferrari? I don’t know it just doesn’t feel right

I'm on the hunt for a 430 (I've found one but just can't get to it due to this fecking lockdown malarkey) but the idea of spending a few more quids for a 458 is compelling.

There really seems to be very few Spiders for sale, do those of you in the know think they are being held back until the dealerships can re open or will we simply see reducing availability going forward as people hang on to them ?

Looks like your old one is back up for sale again.

I’m told it’s a error but there’s been no log book issued since my last one so I don’t know. It’s gone up a bit too. Perhaps they did the paint I don’t know. Never trust the dealers imo

There’s more spiders than italias on Ferrari used. There’s a serious lack of decent spec motors about at the moment . I don’t think it will change

I must post a pic and this comment every three months when the same subject is discussed somewhere on t'internet.

Owned from new in 2014, you'll have to prise the keys from my cold, dead, hands.

That's a beautiful car. The only car that I think exists that could tempt me from my 458 coupe.

I do not prefer the 488 or the F8, having driven the former a lot and the latter a little bit. I will admit I haven't driven recent McLarens so not writing them off as alternatives, just no experience. Also no real incentive to try anything else? Why bother spending huge money for at best small real world improvements and likely some negative tradeoffs? It isn't my track hack and suffices well enough for the fun real word driving that, well, isn't possible right now. If someone is faster than me on the road in something else well good luck to them, I'm happy.

Watching this thread as I'm looking to tick the Ferrari box having owned mostly Porsches and Astons up to now. 458 seems like a sensible place to start without the risk of taking a huge bath on depreciation, sadly just missed a lovely black one at Meridien which was my ideal spec - race seats with alcantara, all blacked out inside.

I had been contemplating this silver spider, also at Meridien. Does anyone here know the car or see anything that would be a complete disaster from a depreciation standpoint? I've taken a few big depreciation hits recently on other cars so keen to avoid another. Appreciate it's not 're-sale red' but personally I'm not a fan of red so either silver or black will be what I go for.

Looks a half-decent price, can't comment on the options as not familiar.

Looks a lovely spec... just consider that if thinking of resale, then Silver is probably the least popular colour for the mid engined cars. I.e. you might get it cheaper than a red or black car, but you’ll likely get hit when you move it on... I.e. sorry to bid you so low sir, but nobody wants a Silver V8 Ferrari. Obviously none of this matters if you like it and plan on keeping it forever.

It's not even low bids, it's NO bids. Why on earth would you ever buy a Ferrari in silver. Your station car should be silver, your ferrari should be red.

Surely with a 'heart' purchase such as this, you have to go with what you want, not what will sell more easily some years down the line. That's crazy surely! And it's an entirely personal thing. I've been fortunate to own two Ferraris (albeit V12s) in silver and black. I personally wouldn't buy a red Ferrari in any iteration. I suspect I'm not alone.
