458 to 458 Speciale, worth the extra 150k?

Hi there

Currently own a 2014 458 Italia which I now fortunately own and have quite a bit of money saved.

Am pondering what to do:
1. Keep current 458 pretty much forever or when I bore of it maybe never as it’s so awesome.
2. Sell or trade in against a Speciale.

Has anyone here owned both the Italia and Speciale, as a road car if there much difference or is it really only on track where the real differences show.

Or are there any must upgrades that benefit an Italia please?

As you i also have a 458 and i love it..If i had £150K to upgrade to a Speciale i'd spend it on a matching F12 to run alongside my 458..Trouble with the Speciale is their values are highly dependant on mileage..
I have already put an Antigravity Li-ion battery on my 458 saving 13.6Kg and no problems if left in the garage for weeks without being drive.I'm now looking for an aftermarket exhaust to fit on it..I've narrowed them down to the Larini or Kline inconel and will decide in the next week or so..

Some good points, maybe keep it and do some mods and yeah a 458 and F12 be a pretty epic pair, just do not really want to add more cars as got too many as it is.

It is tempting to keep my 458, get a set of new ceramics along with Brembo pads and just drive it daily throughout the Summer as I am not worried about throwing miles on it, got it with 14k, now upto 21k so maybe should just keep it few more years until its around 50-60k miles at which no doubt in a few years all this economic disaster would of blown over and it will still be worth circa 100k and I'd have had many years and 50k miles enjoyment out of it. smile

Just always dreams of a Speciale but it could be a regrettable decision I guess as the standard Italia is one awesome car and the Speciale though better is not twice as good, probably keep 458, lock down scrambles your brain has me looking at other stuff. biggrin

Just like you i'm always considering chopping and changing on a daily basis..However i also have too many cars to drive within my free time.If you intend replacing your discs either get them reburbished by Racing Brake or even better replace them with the superior Surface Transforms Carbon Ceramic discs.

To be honest Ferrari quoted me £10,000 for disc, pads and fitting all round, discounted from £13,000 something which I thought was reasonable and in the end surface transform worked out only £1000 cheaper, but not done anything yet as they just advised ceramics were worn and were ok for another year and couple of track days.

I would probably get a second car over upgrading as while I am sure he Speciale is more special than the standard car, it is still broadly the same. As suggested an F12 or maybe a Scuderia or Challenge Stradale would be the way I’d go (or maybe a McLaren - 720 on the face of it sounds like a great complement to a 458)

Keep the 458 and buy a 991 GT3 RS with a little change or a Performante with no change and only just,

Not a bad suggestion, cannot believe they are trading around 120k now, soon be 100k. When I got my 458 they were just shy of 200k, so think in just over a year they have nearly half in value.

To be honest my other dream car was always a GT3 and I see the 991.1 GT3's are now 80-90k other option could be a V12 Vantage S for similar/less money.

My thoughts are to get the Speciale, with one caveat - you must be prepared to ignore the impact of mileage and drive it whenever you want. The 458 is brilliant but the Speciale is the better car and in my opinion if you have the opportunity to own one you should do it. Having another car alongside the 458 won't make 458 feel better, and you may end up forever wondering what it would have been like to drive a car that has been earmarked by almost all enthusiasts as one of the greats. If you are already considering your 458 a 'keeper' that you dont think you will tire of, I would get a specialie - it's the ultimate version of a car you love. and since that would be assumed to be a 'keeper' mileage and value shouldn't matter (too much). I expect even a specialie with intergalactic mileage (so over 10,000 miles in ferrari terms ;-) ) will still be worth a 'lot' of money if still a lot less than a low mileage garage queen.

One of two things will happen:
1) you love the specialie and keep it forever
2) you realise fairly quickly the standard italia is all you need/want, you sell the specialie fairly soon after getting it and loose a little bit in the short term you own it, but you answer the question for yourself

on another note, very surprised your 458 needs new discs and pads all round at 21k miles - do you track it a lot? - the caliper pistons are known to get sticky if the car isn't driven often which can accelerate the wear, but normal road use should see north of 50k miles at least

The owner previous to myself did a few track days in it yes, when I purchased the car it was a main point of negotiation as I spotted it and got near 10k of the listed price, there has been no additional wear really yet and even though the disc are rough and no longer shiny the pads seem to be lasting fine, Ferrari fitted new pads all round 8000 miles ago and they seem to not have worn, at the last service the dealership did note it and suggested they should be changed at the next service which I shall get done but I will make sure I get these Brembo pads instead of Textars.

Yeah I will keep my eye on Speciale market, I am fully aware during these bad times my car is also worth less but if I can get into a Speciale for circa 220k and get 120k roughtly for mine it is 100k to change.

Are there any must have options on the Speciale, like can they be spec with AC and a radio etc?

I wouldn't buy a Speciale now purely because I think it's a car vulnerable to a price correction....they're so bloody mileage sensitive that it can make them hard to enjoy and they seem to have been in the £270k to £300k bracket for a while now although I see a couple of Ferrari dealers have cars lower than that and closer to £250k. With so many Pista's around as well I think that will weigh on prices too. That was my thought pre Covid so even more so now !

I had my eyes on this one at DL, who sold me my 458.

It seems a really nice and considerably cheaper than others with same mileage, so wondered if anyone knew why its cheaper, is it to do with Malaysian registration or because no seat belts?

Interesting point re 458 v Speciale. I could actually go the whole hog and say 360 v F8. One has to decide why you would change. Do you want something faster? Well, unless you plan to track the car or find that illusive fairly empty autobahn, the 360 is more than fast enough, more than powerful enough. As for roadholding, normally at regular speeds the 360 is perfect. What about tech? Do you really need Sat Nav, 4-wheel steering, cameras etc in your toy car? So does it come down to looks? Well, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. So I really must convince myself that I am mad wishing to change my lovely F430 Spider for a 458 Spider. Why oh why smile

Interesting topic thanks OP. I thought my F430 Spider was "the one". And really, if I had never changed, it would be. Now I think the 458 is "the one". It is different and at least to me anyway, and no-one is wrong if they disagree, better in measurable and subjective ways by a large margin over the F40 Spider, which I totally loved. I would love a 991 GT3 to go with it (a plain jane non RS would be fine) as it is the car that I love nearly as much as the 458 and is a better track car (in my view anyway). However, I keep hankering for a Speciale but I'm just not buying one for £275k with 6 k miles and putting 12k on it and halving its value. I want one which is not an "investment" and already has 20k+ miles on it so I can just drive the socks off it and not care. But I reckon I'll end up getting a GT3 instead. To go with the Atom 4. And then I am at peak car for the rest of my life. Sod the EVs.

£150k is a lot of money. As someone said, you could buy another mega car for that given today's climate. I would rather have a 458 and

1) Mclaren 720S
2) Ferrari F12
3) Porsche 911 GT3RS
4) Aston Martin DBS Superlegerra
5) Lamborghini Performante

So much you can do with £150k rather than have just the 1 car IMHO.

I totally get this argument and I also agree with it, a 458 + F12 or 458 + GT3 would be a pretty epic combo.
At the same time getting to experience and own what many regard as the pinnacle and best V8 mid-engined Ferrari of all time is also tempting, I choose my 458 over all the above because it was so damn good, as though it may not technically be as good or fast on paper, but to drive on the road and fun factor for me it was above the cars in that list. As I love the 458 so much if the Speciale really is another step up it is tempting and as I would keep the Speciale for 2-3 years one would hope this storm would of passed so if I can buy and get a good deal I could maybe limit a little the depreciation but I fully appreciate Speciale seems more mileage sensitive than the Italia and any car I buy with 5-10k miles on is gonna have 20-25k miles on it when I move it on (if I ever did) in a few years time.

Have you driven a Speciale? Not half as comfortable to drive as an Italia. I don't think anyone would manage a road trip across Europe in a Speciale....out and out track focussed car. A fantastic one at that but it's a different experience all together...really depends on what one intends to use the car for I guess...

OK that is good to know, it would be used on the road a lot and on a lot of trips, so good input, I guess next step is to really drive one in coming months. smile
