I’ve had mine since April and love it. I’ve not driven it for 4 weeks and can’t wait to take it out this weekend.

I’ve been keeping it in a carcoon because we’re still waiting to move to a place with a garage. Has anyone wintered their 458 in one?

Probably one of the best reviews of the 458:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5A33JEWbJF4

Just watching that makes me want to go and drive mine.

The 458 is just so much fun to drive, its not the fastest, but its more than fast enough but like they say in the video it knocks spots of most the competition including Ferrari's own newer cars when it comes to fun.

I’d forgotten about that review. About the same time a certain J Clarkson, writing in, I think, the Sunday Times compared the two cars thus: on paper the Mac is the better car but the Mac is a pair of tights and the Ferrari is a pair of stockings. Although both do the same job, the Ferrari is just better (bit of paraphrasing from me - I am sure an internet enthusiast could find the exact quote).

Finally rid of my billboard sized temporary number plate.

This is a legally sized and spaced plate - I also have a comedy sized 9x3 inch one to go on a spare removable mount for when abroad our out of the capital which doesn't clip over the bottom of the cav as much - although it's only really noticeable at a low angle and doesn't obscure when looking down at it.

Super happy with the car now. Would love to run with no front plate but the knightsbridge bib have been handing out tickets lately so not worth the aggro

Plate looks great, where did you source from? I need to order new ones for my car.

Back from a 1700+ mile trip around Scotland and wow what a car. Coped incredibly well with everything the weather had to throw at us and was a delight to drive on the fabulous Scottish roads. My friend in the Aventador was clearly impressed with how well the 458 put the power down in damp to very wet conditions. I was certainly glad of the fresh rubber having swapped the original tyres off the car the week before (still only 50% worn, dated 2013). The comfort (bumpy road) suspension worked really well on the less than perfectly smooth roads with raised cattle grids thrown in for extra entertainment.

Can't you keep it in a car storage place ? That's where I'm keeping mine until my garage is sorted. The place I store mine has temperature and humidity control and its only about £150 a month. I can pop over and get the car whenever I want.

Is that in London? If so that’s not a bad price at all. The normal parking spaces I rent in London are they sort of price. What’s the name of the company if you don’t mind?

What an epic trip.

I’ve managed the grand total of 39.3 miles in mine doing a lap of London and going to Tesco’s and back the long way round. hehe

Redline Car Storage near Bury St Edmunds Suffolk have a great reputation and only charge £150/month in a de-humidified building protected by a very advanced security system. Its who I'd use if i lived near London.

If you speak to them, let them know "Andy with the 458" mentioned them. They are extremely nice people and can't do enough to help with ownership.

They can also work on Ferraris and only charge £65 per hour for the workshop. They have a lot of Ferrari's there - and the owner has a 355.

Well, they have my old Beetle in there too so don't worry! I've owned that car for 36 years - it was the first car I bought.

Andyr- you obviously know your 458s - have you seen the cat s recorded black 458 spider on eBay for 119k ? Low mileage etc, does it having been in a light prang make a lot of difference if it has been well repaired ? I always fancied one . . And 119 k seems worth a punt if it has been well repaired and I want to keep for a few years . .
What do you think andyr and other PH ers ?

I saw that, and I've thought about it a bit actually. I wouldn't claim to be an expert ... others here know way more than me, but this is what I think:

- the 458 is often bought as a semi-collectors car. Most people have an eye on rising values. Not all, but many
- the ebay car will remove probably 99% of potential buyers as a result.
- the colour isn't the best for a quick sell. A red car may tempt more people to buy it from you later on. I can't see a black car with that history being that re-sellable.
- the price could be bargained down, I'm sure. Its only worth what someone is prepared to pay for it - and currently no one wants it
- not sure if you could get a warranty from Ferrari on it. But if you could, then that would help a future resale. I see it came from a main dealer, so you could ask

I would get that main dealer to inspect it with a view to getting the Power 15 warranty on it. Owner can pay for that. The dealer will have a view on resale. You might find you can only sell it privately in the future as no main dealer will touch it, and I doubt many specialists will either.

The spec is pretty good on the plus side!

But it has been written off. Your insurance will probably be hard to get. He says "light damage" - but Cat S is a structural write-off. I can't see how it could be "light damage".

I honestly wouldn't be tempted unless you could get a main dealer to reassure you its ok. I expect if you speak to the dealer that sold it they will tell you to walk away.

I’d say a car like that is probably a poisoned chalice for someone looking to get into Ferrari ownership “cheaply”.

If someone is struggling to buy one (not suggesting you are), then it’s likely that they are either going into it short term, and possibly “need” that money at a later date or at short notice. That car is the opposite of “short term money recovery”. It will be difficult to sell, many dealers won’t touch it, many private buyers won’t entertain it, and you’ll be faced with questions from the very reduced pool of already limited supercar buyers asking you about the write off damage, with you being unable to answer questions about it being a subsequent owner to when it happened.

It is in my opinion a false economy buying a car like that if you’re looking to save money buying one. You’d be far better off finding the extra cash to get one with good history and ideally a warranty (either for yourself or to pass on).

The only way it works in my opinion is if a) the damage is known and proven with lots of photos and evidence from a competent garage of the repair work, b) the money being spent on it is “throwaway money”, i.e. you won’t be gutted if it loses more or takes an age to sell down the line or c) it’s 100% a forever car for you (which again means you’d need to be essentially well off anyway, so see B). £119k isn’t even that cheap in my humble opinion.

120 sounds like a lot for a cat car.

Will be hard to finance and almost impossible to resell. 100 might be interesting...

The cat car only makes sense to me if you are assuming you are going to keep forever. As others have said it will be very difficult to move on. I’m looking for one, but as I like to be able to get out swiftly when I’m ready for the next car there is no possibility I would touch it.
