How can it be quicker than a 430? It has less power and more weight? The gear box makes a small difference, but for handling and fast A-B I would rather be in a car 286kg lighter.
California - 453bhp, 1735kg (0-60- is 3.8 secs)
F430 - 483bhp, 1449kg (tested 0-60 is 3.5 secs)
note - data from Evo
Other sources show the standing quarter in the F430 as being quicker than the California
0-60 in 3.5 seems suspiciously fast for a 430. I wonder if that was a, shall we say, optimal example of the car that was delivered for the road test. I will agree though that a 430 definitely doesn't feel slower than a California, even if the cali is a fraction of a second faster to 60. It's inherent GT-ness means it intentionally isolates the driver a little more. That's not a criticism though, it's a cracking GT car.California - 453bhp, 1735kg (0-60- is 3.8 secs)

--edit-- I looked myself and I couldn't find anything where Evo tested a 0-60 time of 3.5 for the 430. I could find a page where they claim an *estimated* 0-60 time of 3.5 seconds for the Scuderia, which of course has more power, less weight, and a faster gearbox than the regular 430.

Cali is for cruising down the motorway with the top down and flooring it through tunnels. Try and hammer it out of roundabouts though and you may well write it off ( came close twice )…
I drive a 911 now and it feels impossible to write offf !!
Miss the California though - best sound available.
I may buy another and spend some money on the stereo / speakers / satnav etc as that is all that let’s it down for me.

Exactly - for me I just wanted a sense of ‘event ‘ when I started it up - I did get a bit tired of people saying ‘it’s not a real Ferarri ‘ and ‘it’s a bit slow’ when all I care about was ragging it down the dual carriageway whilst listening to some 80s disco . . .
Slightly amazed at the suggestion the California is slow.. is 3.8 secs to 60, and 193 really slow… it’s quicker than a 430, and 360, and near as dam it as fast as the 458.. being only 0.40 secs slower to 60.. and dropping only 9mph top speed. Maybe I’m missing something..

One to ask Car wows Matt Watson and Yianni to test side by side then!
I prefer the 430, but I was just stating the California isn’t a slow car as shown by these stats, despite what the all knowing public thinks. And a DCT box would I suspect make a huge difference over the F1, which I think most would agree isn’t amazing.
That said I’m considering a 430 myself, but can’t ignore the value and amount of car you get in the California, but I realise they are not directly competing given what they are and do, but pound for pound vs performance makes you stop and think that’s all.

430 spider is a cracker but not a gt car.
The California with magnaride suspension and seats that don’t have an engine behind them is a very comfortable car for tall drivers.
I’d love a 430 spider but couldn’t do 5 hours on the motorway in one …
I did 12 hours in a day through Europe in mine last year. Whilst it wasn't as bad you might think it wasn't exactly great either! It's doable but a California would be much more suitable which was why I went for a test drive in the T when I got home. The California with magnaride suspension and seats that don’t have an engine behind them is a very comfortable car for tall drivers.

For the avoidance of doubt. I am not putting the Cali down, its just an entirely different brief from the 430. Space in my garage for both.
I question the 0-60 times on the 430 as they always look a bit slow at 4 secs given the power to weight. The tests I saw online were not for the Scud, some show about 3.5 to 60mph other show 3.8, official stats are 4 secs.

I recommend you buy your next used car from me !I question the 0-60 times on the 430 as they always look a bit slow at 4 secs given the power to weight. The tests I saw online were not for the Scud, some show about 3.5 to 60mph other show 3.8, official stats are 4 secs.
I never really floor them and never even used the launch control ! The differences in top speeds etc don’t bother me - i just think most buyers of gt cars are like me.
Top down, go for a cruise, take your mum to the shops, the odd car and coffee - then handing over a good few grand to dealers every time there is an issue . .
Main problem I see with the Californias is that they probably don’t qualify for any warranty due to age. I had a 7 grand gearbox job on the California covered by warranty then a smaller job covered for the Cali T.
Stuff you would never put up with on a German car less than 10 years old …
