So - 458 has just been returned from its annual service, MOT and latest brake recall campaign to fix fluid cap and updating of instrument panel node software - and its odometer is now reading less miles than when it went in!
Has anyone else experienced this - the dealer’s service manager (I can’t get through to the principal!) has said he thinks it must be the software update and will need to check with Ferrari?

Nothing to worry about. It's just the Ferris Bueller effect caused by running the car in reverse to calibrate the new software. That's why the car now has fewer miles than when it went in.

I knew clocking of ferraris was rife and widespread but I never expected the ferrari main dealers did it as well yikes

Well it’s certainly happened in the main dealer’s care - let’s see what Ferrari Italy have to say about it.

I believe that many of the current crop of car history check apps base their mileage warnings on both MOT and service history, and once an anomaly is found the car will have a mileage warning logged against it. Hopefully it's okay but it's worth checking with the dealer.

I’m intrigued. I had the recall done in May and didn’t pay any attention to the mileage. Currently I am in Italy with the Portofino and the 458 is in the garage at home but when I get back I will definitely check.

How many miles has the odometer reduced by?

I would be insisting its returned to the correct mileage or otherwise if a future service or MOT is documented with lower miles it will be known to everyone its been clocked and trash its value.

Otherwise just drive it as much as possible to correct the mileage to above where it was before

That will depend on how many miles the dealer has put on it in their week of having it…

As long as Ferrari are ok about it it sounds like the perfect time to drive it with reckless abandon. The unbridled enjoyment of those free miles you'll experience cannot be understated. smile

(it is odd though)

No acknowledgment from Ferrari yet. The dealer assured me they have raised the question.
From your reply though, would you be ok with having your car clocked if you thought you could get away without it being detected?

It was a tongue in cheek reply, really. It was meant as a commentary on how mileage sensitive the cars are, and how this presents a unique opportunity for an owner who would otherwise have to “watch the miles”.

For clarity - I would not be happy with the ambiguity and would want to have it addressed, presumably by winding it forwards to the correct values. I would not feel assured that some part of the car (e.g. gearbox) wasn’t recording a different, hidden value that wouldn’t cause a problem in the future.

Keep us updated. My dealer has responded to say that Ferrari have confirmed to them that the s/w update has caused the odometer to go backwards! I have asked for this in writing and am awaiting receipt.

How many miles are we taking about here? 10's, 100's, or 1000's?

It’s possible Ferrari have found a bug in the speedo sensor clicks counter to kilometres or miles travelled conversion…

Just an update to my previous post:
My dealer has now responded with a reply from the FNE "Senior Aftersales Manager" which is repeated below:

"I have reviewed the two downloads from the DEIS and I can confirm that the download does seem to have caused a discrepancy between the original mileage and the second download. We would be happy to correct this, but we will require the vehicle in the workshop to remotely interact via our technical department."

In my instance the discrepancy is single digit miles (assuming and trusting that my car was not "test driven" in their care) so there seems little point in an additional 80 mile round trip to the dealer to "correct" it at this stage. The reply doesn't confirm that this issue has been raised with the factory, (doesn't warrant further investigation in their view?) so it will be interesting to learn if others of you experience any irregularities - especially it the glitch is removing (or adding) a random number!

If the odometer reading doesn't match up with the other mileage readings on the car I would still not be happy even if it is single digit difference.
It would ring alarm bells with anyone checking out the car and imply clocking.
