Love the Tyson & Foreman rolled into one analogy! Couldn't agree more. The 599 GTO is off-the-scale desirable. The video of Steve Sutcliffe caning it through a tunnel is one of the most lol automotive clips I've ever seen. The sound alone is worth the asking price. If F1 cars still sounded like this we might all still be watching it! Anyway, here it is in all its glory for those who haven't seen/heard it. Just go straight to 1min 40sec and enjoy....

You couldn't manage two laps of Silverstone without the brakes overheating

Its all very silly but this video has me in Rome back in 2011

Funny you say that. I was looking at buying a car last year but the video of it on track with the brakes practically on fire put me off.

That's disappointing to read.

Is 'yours' still in the UK?

I think so, but I've never seen any photos of it on the road so probably just unused in a collection which is where I guess most cars have ended up

Interesting. Such a shame if so, but then if they're worth close to £1m, it's understandable.

A car like the 599 GTO needs to be driven. This isn't a sentimental point, it's pragmatic, the GTO is a complex thoroughbred car that needs strong exercise. It's a win:win, great for the car and even better for its driver.

I think its a travesty if more aren't used! The sound of them is unbelievable! I don't think your incoming TDF will sound as good as the GTO?

IMO the Speciale was very disappointing. I drove one thinking it was going to be like the GTO was to a standard 599 and it wasn't. Just too quiet for a start. GTO is a great car (though not an 800k car IMO) but the Speciale is a bit of a let down.
Judging from particularly strong demand here and abroad your view of the Speciale isn't shared. Didn't you have a problem with the dealer supplying yours so you passed on it at the start? Regarding the retail price for a RHD GTO, I agree any asking price around 800K is very optimistic. But whatever price is correct, it'll still be comfortable ahead of a UK GTO's 330K original price.
In the current market, relating prices to whether a car is any good is problematic IMO. I suspect a lot of demand for Speciale is that it is, or was, the latest and greatest and there was a chance to make a fast buck. It is just my opinion, but the car could have been so much better. In essence it is a 458 with the electronics calibrated to make it slide a bit more. As you know, the GTO was so much more than his compared to a standard 599 and I'm simply saying the Speciale was a missed opportunity/cynical marketing exercise for Ferrari. I cancelled my order, I was getting disillusioned anyway, but mainly because the dealer promised me a pre shutdown slot but only if I specced it to the eyeballs, then they said the car was in build, and miraculously a few weeks later the slot appeared to have slipped several months. Another dealer when I went to test an F12 let me have the privilege of driving it for 10 minutes in wet mode on the A12. Many F dealers are just appalling and I've currently lost any interest in the marque. They'll survive I'm sure - and so will I, plenty of more interesting and less predictable choices in the market.

That is desperately poor; you do wonder how some dealerships stay in business. Sadly it seems that customer service is a complete lottery, within brands and across the board. I have nowhere near the car buying experience of some of the posters on this thread, but have bought several Porsches and a couple of Ferraris over the years. Ferrari was the best - particularly the 599 purchased at Dick Lovett in Swindon; they were outstanding. Porsche were the worst. On one occasion getting a test drive at one dealership was such a chore that I gave up. And trying to buy a 991 GT3 and a Cayman GT4....forget it. I tried and it was like trying to herd cats. Drove me round the bend!

By all accounts the tdf sounds incredible, we'll see. Will need a few tunnel runs to test when she arrives later this year wink

A PH'er took me for a blast down a damp runway in his, then new, GTO a few years ago. The whole experience remains clear in my mind. I think just about anyone would find it seductive. To experience is to want.

It's possible, but I think more likely some owners realise the market generally is fragile and as the saying goes, it's never wrong to take a profit. Even if a a RHD UK car drops to 650K trade, it will still be c 100% value increase to the owner in 4 years (assuming original owner).

For those GTO original owners who also have a TDF, it might be case of keeping the two for a time at least. Having those two V12 beasties to play with is probably not an opportunity to pass up.

I think the market for 599 GTO's is far less fragile than people think..a Ferrari with a GTO badge is ALWAYS going to command a big premium, it is a serious bit of Ferrari history and although there are a few on the market i think prices will hold. In a few years time i wouldn't be surprised if clean ones are going for >£1 mil. The Gto is also a lot more beautiful than a TDF in my opinion and whereas the tdf is a road going version of the f12, the gto is a road going version of the 599XX...much cooler.
