550 Replacement key

Was hoping for some advice regarding a replacement key for a 550. When I bought my car circa 18 months ago the black key fob didnt work. The garage I bought it from thought it was the battery but it turned out the fob had stopped emitting. They took my car back in when I was on holiday for three weeks but failed to get a replacement working. They have then been speaking to Lancasters regarding getting a code which needs to come directly from the factory. The code came but couldn't be made out so they have been chasing for them to resend. I have the red key fob. Does anyone have any experience of successfully replacing a fob or have any suggestions I can give to them to resolve?
