I'm looking for a replacement for the original Sony unit in my 456. Either a working dash control unit (UK/Europe version) and the radio (in the boot) or a modern unit.

Has anybody found a modern "shallow" unit that fits the dash (below the gear lever).

This is for a 456 not 456M.

the other thing that was suggested to me by a car hifi dealer, was buy a head unit with a full clip off front, and then solder cat6 cable between the head unit in the boot and the clip off front.
I've seen JVC units, but not sure who else does full clip off fronts.

First off I own a '94 manual 456 and I have up rated the audio set up in the car. I am not aware of any current unit that will fit in the shallow centre console hole. If your Sony unit no longer works, then you will need to go down the face off unit route, with a replacement cat 5 wiring loom to the main unit in the boot, as suggested above. Does the Original radio still work? if so what are you trying to achieve?

I believe one of the guys on ferrarichat has got an iPod to work as a replacement for the CD changer, if that's you want to do.

I suspect the best way to improve the sound, is likely to be remove the carpet on the door cards in front of the door speakers for a starter.

It may be me !!! I have an iPod input via a connect2 adaptor box, which is plugged into the original cd changer input, I have used the original Sony head unit, but added an alpine 4 ch amp to drive up rated speakers which has improved the sound and increased the volume of the original set up. The original set up was very mediocre and not at all that good, it used cheap speakers and pretty low powered amps. One problem that I have found is that getting any real low bass is difficult because you cannot install rears speakers larger than 5.5 inch due to space restrictions. I have considered a sub unit, perhaps In the boot, but running the extra power cable and the space it would take up have out me off. After all, who needs a loud full range stereo when you have the sound of the V12 sowing machine to listen to!!!!

Just to add, that my upgrade has given me a louder and better sounding stereo but you can now hear alternator whine which is somewhat annoying. I think that having a much more powerful amp 4x100w compared to 2x50w and 2x30 w rears has exposed the original head unit and speaker wiring. It may be that the alternator is on the way out, but so far I have not the time or money to sort it!!

Original radio still works, but car came from Japan so receives 76-90Mhz. Display faulty.
Cheapest way is a band expander, but obviously does not cure display problem.
In the boot as well as the original radio are 2 amps (Ferrari plus another) and Sony CD player.

I believe the head unit is the same for all countries. It is the radio in the boot that is country specific.

I was hoping to find a "shallow" unit that would fit the dash and a radio unit for the boot and keep the amps and CD. This seems not possible. I'm not planning on changing the speakers as I think they may have been changed as the sound is good and upgrading a car's sound system is second nature in Japan.

It looks as though the answer is to find a UK/Europe market original and then go with n46's connect2 adaptor box.

n46 I have a fully rebuilt alternator from my 550 if you need one.

Right, you only option is to replace the radio with a new face off unit and use cat5 cable to connect from the face off to the head unit in the boot. I do not know of any radio that is shallow enough to fit in the centre console. If you got a radio with an USB input on the face off then you could connect an iPod straight to that. On ferrarichat there is a,post on how to fit a face off with cat 5 cable, it means soldering two sets of cable to the connector on the back of the face off and running the cables through to the boot and soldering to the head unit. You may be able to get connectors from RS components that may fit the new radio and save you having to solder. The run to the boot is not too bad, rear seat needs to come out and then you can route to the boot though access holes on either side above the rear wheel arch.
