I'm with you re the paperwork, Murph. However when I change our everyday cars (Audis) I am always amazed that the dealer doesn't want any of it because it is all on the system.

Just make sure you're clear on what you want fixed in order to continue with the deal and be prepared to walk.

Don't listen to any "we priced that in" nonsense.

Ref not releasing data....they're talking bks. I've noticed car dealers say this frequently when being asked for service history, hiding behind data protection acts etc. If there's no personally identifying data on the details they supply (and there does not have to be) then there is no data protection issue. It's simply the record of work carried out against a machine. They either can't be bothered to supply the info (most likely) or don't want to (which would make me more worried). This all applies doubly so if the previous "owner" was another dealer!

As a specific example, the supplying dealer said similar to me when buying my GT. I contacted the servicing agent who emailed me a copy of all work done on the car (with any personally identifying data removed). Easy.

I'm more surprised that people who own these cars are careless with the paperwork. I can't be the only one who keeps every last shred of paper for a car? The most annoying thing about the tax disc changes in the UK was not being able to keep a nice record of them with the car smile
Don't really care about service paperwork on new cars - car is being serviced by the dealer as part of the 7-year service plan and I have never asked them to provide me with a copy.

Did keep all the paperwork on my 355, but that is because it was serviced at an independent and I wanted to be able to show what was done. If I had had it serviced in the official network, I would have probably been more relaxed about keeping records.

Thanks everyone who chimed in.

worked out a deal in the end taking into account some of the issues highlighted. There aren't as many 599's to choose from
Here in Australia as there are in the U.K.

My first ever F Car, that V12 is something else. Very underwhelmed by the exhaust note so will be looking to do something

First stop, fuel.... gotta get used to it!

Even if it's on a service plan and being done at a main dealer (which in itself is no guarantee of anything) surely you're wanting to do the same thing - demonstrate it's been looked after.

Being able to sit a buyer down with a coffee and a ream of paper to pore over has to be better than leaving them trying to extract info out of idiot dealers who hide behind data protection rules smile

I generally agree with you - from what I have seen so far when looking at cars in Germany though, the Germans do not get so hung up on all this proof of services stuff (I might be wrong, but most histories I saw seemed incomplete´/ annual service also seems to be seen as optional ...), so I am taking more relaxed view nowadays... not planning on selling and adding 20-30k km every year will render it worthless anyway.

Edit: And I would be really surprised if my dealer could not give me a comprehensive print out of the entire service history of my car if I do decide to sell

Lovely - enjoy in good health!

Initially I was not a big fan of the 599 looks, but I have to say they are aging really well and I keep looking ones for sale on a regular basis.

Do let us know how you get on with it - driving impressions and more pics always welcome

Weather where you are looks much more suitable for Ferraris then the meter of snow outside of my window

Thank you. It's gone straight off for a detail and ceramic coating, but from the limited kms/miles I've done, I can attest to the fact that the V12 lump is something else. It's also very comfortable inside .... will definitely share more thoughts further down the line

Great weather here yes, sunshine most days and 20-30degree weather, but draconian speed laws and enforcement make it hard to enjoy. Doing 70mph here on a highway will get you points, as it's a strict 110kmh/69mph lol....

In the trunk/boot, where you connect the trickle charger, is a battery off switch. If there is a gremlin turn the switch and all power is cut. Make sure you keep doors and boot open. Leave for a good 60 seconds and switch back on. The car powers up and usually clears all gremlins. Watch the doors when power is off because with power on the windows automatically drop as you close the door. No power, no window drop. Slam the door shut with power off and you'll likely bust the window!

Enjoy your hunt.
Hey camlet

Can you or anyone tell me exactly where this battery off switch is ? Thank you

Morning. Open boot. Look down to the right and you will see a small detachable panel on the right hand side boot wall. Take panel off and underneath you'll find the battery locator switch (sort of looks like the top of a water tap); you will also see the small docking port for the trickle charger (to the left of the locator switch). Please remember not to close an open door after you've swtiched the battery off.

The Germans and Japanese don't seem to care so much. Which of course makes it easier for an unscrupulous dealer to hide behind such a fact if selling a car with a murky past. I've seen a 355 that's been back and forth to Germany several times in its life...

I'm with Murph. I'd not look at a car without paperwork. If main dealer serviced you WILL be provided with a printout of the inspection including clutch wear on F1 ' box etc. If I looked at a car with main dealer s/h but with no paperwork to support I'd want to know why. The inspection report always lists items that will need attention; if not immediately, then in the future. I've called dealers for history before and never been given this report, simply confirmation that work has been carried out.

Sounds like it could be expensive to put all right, Ferrari parts and labour is quickly escalated suspension could be costly. I would keep looking for a car that doesn't need anything, you might pay more to purchase but the car doesn't come with any additional cost to fix and will be a better car come re sale.

I recently had my 599 serviced by the main dealer and the reports usually throw up suspension rectification work (amongst other things) being required, the fact is all 599s and f430s have a small amount of play. If you can hear noises from the suspension or the car doesn't feel tight then it should be investigated further otherwise not a concern. Remember the garages are interested in making money from you!

Show me a 599 outside the network with an absolutely clean PPI from a main dealer and I'll buy you a beer.

Granted a garage is going to suggest work giving them labour, but my point was It's always better to buy the best within your budget. I have been on the receiving end of a large bill for a scuderia suspension work, after knowing about a noise and the car felt ok on the drive.
