anyone any insights into what is happening in the used market, esp Mc's?

Very few cars for sale used at the moment - have people decided to hang on for the year, has everyone bought everything already given YOLO, or do you expect that post-lockdown there'll be a flurry of buying and a more usual car flow? Asking as keen to buy a Mc but finances currently less liquid than I'd like so waiting would be preferred, but not if there's no availability later in the spring/summer!

I know none of us have a crystal ball, but there may be other insights out there. FWIW I think the supply will more or less dry up now that an end to lockdown is sort of in the diary, because people now have a date they can actually go and see and test drive cars, so they will wait until then and then shop and chop and change after that - so April/May will see a pickup of volumes. But if you have other insights, do share!

I am not sure lockdown is going to be the best time to advertise/sell a car, having said that, being a buyer myself, "we" are still out there, backed up by a couple of other threads on here with new mclaren buyers. The 4c whats app group i am on is also seeing an influx of new owners and people wanting to buy, there is a shortage of cars but thats good for supply and demand, albeit at a different price bracket.

Now we have this roadmap out of lockdown and the weather is picking up (at least this weekend) you may find a few more come to market, but it is complete crystal ball stuff.

Last weekend there were near 50 570s on autotrader, now just over 40
Pistoneads near 40 and now 35

So they are selling.

I’ve no insight re: future availability although with a Summer approaching, lockdown hopefully easing I imagine a lot of owners can’t wait to get out and drive rather than sell.

However I have been watching the 540C/570S/720S (as well as other coupes) market for the last year and availability has taken a dive. People seem to be buying rather than selling and although I don’t have the numbers at hand now, all availability numbers have dropped. 570S, 540C & 12C coupes appear to have been very popular with for sale numbers hitting/sitting close to single digits per model.

Apart from a possible spike of owners selling ahead of the Summer, I can’t see much changing between now and the winter but will see.

Personally if you see a car you like now, I wouldn’t hang around.

There are conflicting views that will polarise people. On the one hand it is clear that Bounce Back Loans & furlough support, coupled with lower production have resulted in a drying up of supply. With previous Quantitive Easing it is estimated only 8% of the money printed actually came into the economy (money supply) the rest recapitalised the financial markets.

This time around the American money supply grew by 24% in broad terms last year, more money chasing the same assets, or at least limited, and a similar position in the UK.

This suggests a short term strangle on supply coupled with increased demand. However what happens once furlough has gone and demand is not artificially supported? Is unemployment likely to stay at 5.1%? Increasing unemployment coupled with a return to normalised benefits would suggest that there will be an increase in supply somewhere down the line. I’d expect this to happen three months from the end of furlough. IMO.

I had mine for sale via Bell and Colvil and it was very very slow leading up to the Xmas period. A couple of enquiries and then we went into lockdown.

Then I made the mistake of getting the car back and driving it!.... I have now spent more money on it buying carbon and also a new number plate. biggrin

The approach I have now taken is that with the current market it was not worth taking a low ball offer so I plan to enjoy it for this summer and then take a view.

I had mine up for sale, there was lots of interest but Lockdown was a pain, a few people interested in paying for the car and sending a transporter to collect but I didn’t feel comfortable doing that to be honest.
So I have decided to keep it for now, ordered some Michelin’s and road taxing tomorrow smile.

I think a big part of the market at the moment is that one of the easiest things to enjoy in lockdown/when restrictions are relaxed is a great car.

Genuine question, why were you nervous about someone paying for the car, and then sending a transporter to collect it?

(Although I'd personally also want to meet the buyer, and for them to see the car personally before they pay for it.)

I wouldn’t buy a 3k car unseen never mind one of these. I sent lots of photos, videos, answered lots of questions and was totally honest to everyone but I didn’t want to risk someone having the car turn up to them then they make some elaborate story how the car wasn’t as described and then start wanting an extra 20k off !
There’s always a risk from both sides, I may revisit selling late summer but for now I’m going to just enjoy it.
