Hi guys,

I’ve been looking and researching for my first McLaren and have largely decided that the 570GT is the best option for me and my budget.

Problem I’m having is that most of them are fairly conservative colours and I wanted something a little more… bold. So I figured getting something with the options I want in a colour that’s perhaps easier to sell in a couple of years time would be the best option. Then simply get it wrapped in something more suited to my tastes.

Has anyone has had theirs wrapped and have any recommendations?

Personally I’d never touch a wrapped car with a barge pole

Buy the colour you want, or are happy with

I would avoid a wrapped car too. PPF I can understand, but otherwise, especially with McL's paint issues, It would have to be removed before I looked at it.

The only car I wrapped was an MR2 roadster I bought on impulse. I wrapped a big ribbon around it and swapped it for the wife's car outside her office and hung a "Happy Anniversary" banner on. It wasn't our anniversary, but her colleagues thought I was so lovely I didn't get as much of a bking later.

Its always an option to get a decent spec car with conservative colours and wrap to suit if you cant hold out for a bold/bright colour.

Personally i wouldnt have any issue about wrapping a car or buying one, if a decent outfit has done it you would never know its been wrapped (apart from non std colour) or removed come to that, no great difference to ppf that everyone wants to have smile

Thanks for the feedback guys. Interesting that some are so against it. I would have thought a well known wrapper wouldn’t put a wrap ontop of poor paint?

The trouble is I’m just not finding the colours that I want, only been looking for a McLaren for a few months now but have been looking for a car for a couple of years. Just wasted most of that time on an Emira deposit. So just keen to get into something and not miss another summer of driving!

I sympathise with your frustration finding a suitable car, there just aren't that many out there in good colours. I think since Nov there was one VO car in the up to £90k bracket that sold privately, plus a handful of later cars that went through in orange.

You could try a cheeky offer on the DMB collection car, it's been for sale for ~four months. A similar low mileage early car in Vermillion came down from £100k to £90k asking before selling, so they might see the benefits of taking £90k for it now, you never know. Probably an outside chance though.

I wouldn't buy a car wrapped, if it's been unwrapped then I would assess it as any other including the paintwork condition. If the paint was better for having been wrapped then that would be an advantage.

I don't think the bright colours are harder to sell, probably slightly easier, I think there's a tad more demand for them from used buyers than from new, if you see what I mean. If anything the good colours sell quicker, hence when you browse AT you see lots of white cars wink But I wouldn't let resale sway you either way as I think it's not significant, just try to find the car you want.

You could ask in a more general forum (Supercar general or GG) for wrapping recommendations, it's not that McLaren specific, may get more tips on good/bad places to go.

OP, if you find a car in the wrong colour but the rest of it is good i.e. spec and condition, you could always look at peelable paint that the likes of Litchfield and Topaz do - Chris Harris had his 911 GT3 coated by Litchfield in a different shade of yellow to the original colour.

Thanks for the suggestions guys! I went down to McLaren Ascot today and actually bought the Vega Blue 570GT they have for sale. Absolutely ecstatic, car was in fantastic condition so it all worked out in the end, and managed to get one in a colour I really liked.

Although my “budget” took a bit of a beating!

Congrats, great buy! I assume it's this one https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202302033... , nice spec with the best wheels too.

Vega Blue is a really strong colour. Considering the safety net of buying approved used, owning a younger and higher spec car, not having the hassle/cost of wrapping and unwrapping it, and the resale being better on a late car with such a strong colour and high spec, I reckon overall you'll end up better off for having stretched your budget a little now.

The step up from the RX-7 is still leaving me open-mouthed tbh, I think you'll be very happy indeed.

Enjoy!

Yep that’s the one! It was in so much better condition than the others I have seen I knew it was the one as soon as I sat in it.

Can’t wait to pick it up! Also nice to have a bit of security with the McLaren warranty.

The RX7 will likely be staying (but getting SORN) until I decide what to do with it. It is a childhood dream car of mine so just seeing it in the garage brings me joy! so whilst I have the space I think it will stick around. I’m just prepared for nothing to really compare to the McLaren!

Congrats that is a monster spec and lovely looking car. Seems to have both lux and security packs along with a load of carbon.

Vega blue is really stunning in person, not sure if you found the same but its one of those colours that looks so much deeper and richer in the flesh than it does in pics. Its one of my favourite colours alongside the Volcano ones. I believe it may have only been available on later sport series cars as rarely see earlier models in this stunning colour.

Enjoy in good health.
