308 mandatory daytime running lights :(

So in Switzerland, daytime running lights are now mandatory from 1.1.14 on...

I DON'T want to drive my 308 GTB with it's pop-up headlight during the day though

All daytime running lights I can find for sale are horrible LED-Christmas-light-bars

Fog-lights are NOT legal as daytime running lights

Anyone know of a brand making decent-looking daytime running lights? Ideally with a warmer light = using conventional bulbs that are a) certified ECE-R87 RL and b) would look OK on my 308?

Unfortunately not.

1) they are not EU certified as running lights
2) they are outside the required range of 400 cd to max 1'200 cd

Note that this law is less about logic and more about being able to collect additional fines

I have a recollection from being a Ferrari obsessed child, that the 308 had "Carello" covers on the fog lights.

I assume that if you can find the correct parts, you can wire them up as DRLs and that will meet the legal requirements?

but should you get stopped by the police, would they know?

not sure - guess depends on the cop's training - the position lights are tiny and weak on the 308 so it's kinda obvious

However I did have the hope to have at least ONE legal car in my garage

There's also always the insurance question - If I have an accident and they don't want to pay all they need to do it point out the car war not road legal...

Could you fit a brighter bulb to the sidelights? I did this on my 355 and reckon they might look bright enough, alternatively your 2nd picture is a 308 GTSi, doubt you could source the original lights but it should't be too difficult to create something similar.

I could - I wouldn't be legal though ... they MUST be marked "E" "RL" in the glass to show they are EU homologated and designated as running lights - really frustrating... it's a bunch of red tape

so I would still get a fine, would still not pass the Swiss "MOT" and would still have an "illegal modification" that could cost me my insurance payout in case of an accident.

I know your not fussed on the christmas tree style Leds - but what about a strip between the louvres mounted slightly further back, so you see them when they are on, but can't when they are off - so its looks original but meets the requirements ?

What about other cars travelling through Switzerland from EU states for example on holiday, are they expected to comply too ?

I think LEDs tucked behind the grille are by far the best option.

Do they need to be wired into the ignition so they are always on or can they be switched? If the latter, you can leave them off unless prompted by the jobsworths.

I have a similar annoyance with the rear fog rule in the UK for post 4/80 vehicles. All attachments I've seen so far look like they come from a caravan spares shop.

Have you asked either other local owners or dealers or owners club as I'm sure you are not the only 308 owner in Switzerland and owners of other similar vehicles must have the same requirement so trying to re-invent the wheel may not be necessary ?

Couldn't you attach driving lights to that huge aerial with the red flag attached to the rear boot of your car, shown in the first pic, is it OEM?
