I've got a couple of 911's, but recently bought a 924 from 1984.

Supposedly not a real Porsche, slow, engine in the wrong place, blah blah...

Totally different animal, of course, but really enjoying it. Nicely built, well-balanced period piece.

Wondering if a Mondial 8 would give me a similar kick?

Yes, it's the slow one. The unglamorous one. I kind of like that.

Plus, my budget is only £25-30k.

So, what's the view on the Mondial 8? Under-appreciated classic? Or the runt of the litter?

It will probably have skimped maintenance going back years and be rusty.

Costs the same to maintain as the more valuable 348 etc but will never gain value to equal the expense of keeping it on the road.

Like any old car it might suffer a catastrophic failure at any time, the difference is that you might not be able to sell it as is or repair the fault without taking a huge loss.

They look a bit odd as well.

I think the Mondial T is the (more) expensive one to maintain, the pre-T Mondials are a little more straightforward.

Had a Mondial T cab for a little while, watch out for electrics, lots of the switches and bits behind them are NLA. You should get one of the best ones out there for 25k though so hopefully will be well looked after!

Really? confused

Care to show us where these top quality, well looked after Mondial's are for sale for £25K? - Because looking on Pistonheads, Ebay, Autotrader and Car and Classics, I'd say your £5K~£15K below what the market is actually asking!

Did a similar thing myself and bought a 924S - huge fun for a fraction of great price as well.

Ferraris, just so expensive from experience...

Good luck in your search

Will post some pics at the weekend.

4rephill was right, though - my initial £30k budget was £10k short!

Buy the best you can afford - that's always the advice, right?

Anyway, watch this space...

Coupe or Spyder? The Mondial Coupe is my favourite looking Ferrari. Seem to see less and less of them at shows each year though.

If you’ve had a 450 SEAC the mondial should be like state of the art Japanese engineered hehe

Good call on getting the QV version over an earlier Mondial 8.

The "8" has it's fans (and as with all Ferrari's, some owners get incredibly defensive about their cars at the slightest hint of any criticism), but the fact is, performance wise, it feels lacking:

Mondial 8 0~60mph: 8.5 ~ 9 seconds [depending on source]
Mondial QV 0~60mph: @ 6.4 seconds

You're going to notice that difference, even though they're all old cars now.

(And before anyone states that 0~60mph times are irrelevant, especially on cars of this age, they do give a direct guide as to comparative performance level)

The Mondial QV simply has a bit more fizz to it, that adds to the driving experience.

The "8" I suspect, whilst special in its own way (All Ferrari's feel special to drive - Every trip is an occasion!), would have disappointed you in the long run - Especially when a Ford C-Max MPV was out running you (1.6 Eco-boost/2.0 TDi: 0~60mph: 8.2secs.)

Just completed the 365-mile drive from Italia Autosport up in the Peak District to home here in Cornwall.

Happy to say I'm the lucky new custodian of John Pogson's Argento/Bordeaux Mondial QV, made famous in this film: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WHkU1h_sKM4

He gave me a masterclass in how to drive it properly yesterday - that alone was worth the trip!
