Had a look at those stupid prices, in the end took the old bulb out and got a replacement (2 of) from Halfords, £3.50.
Nothing special about the bulbs in that car, same as loads of other cars out there.
Job done. smile

baptist, can you get to the bulb by removing the grill below the light, or do you have to remove the wheel and liner? thanks

I didnt take the arch liner out.
Remove the small grille and you can get a socket set on the 2 bolts required to remove the cluster.
Took about 15 minutes.

Many thanks... So as per Andrews link which I had read before I asked you didn't grope around in the dark for the bulb mount in the back but removed the whole assembly...

Just to add a little bit extra to this for future reference to others....

Apparently, the later models, approx. '08 onwards, had some extra heat shielding on one side of the car (I think o/s but might be wrong) which makes it all but impossible to change the bulb through the honeycomb grille (unless you've got tiny hands).

So for later models, for a dead cert, lift the car, remove the wheel and arch liner, and remove the two nuts that secure the light. Far easier than grubbing around behind the heat shield.

Early models you will probably get away with just going in via the honeycomb directly.

For what it's worth, I started doing all the odd jobs like this myself after some amazing prices from the main dealer. They wanted £140 to change the centre brake bulb (cost me £22 and about ten minutes), and £32 to change a number plate bulb (60p and less than five minutes) and over £200 to change the bonnet seal (£30 for a genuine one and half hour to fit). I appreciate they have to make a markup, but that was just totally crazy. I'm an idiot, but according to their prices, could be charging £600 per hour to do basic Lambo maintenance.

Ok, I'm not going to be changing the clutch or anything, but at over £600 per hour to change bulbs and things, I'd rather do it myself.

Coupled with the car coming back with a badly scratched sat nav screen that they refused liability for, I'm pretty switched off main dealers at the moment. Especially B......m.

Not sure who that is?....

I'll probably use Mike Pullen this year, haven't heard a bad word said about them.

Good bloke. I travel all the way from Cornwall to get him to service mine. Very honest and trustworthy and knows his stuff. After taking it to him and speedy for the 1st time quite a few years back now, I don't think I'd consider getting it serviced/checked over anywhere else.

Best guide. On drivers side of UK cars, certainly no need to remove wheel and liner.... You can get to everything fine

I did mine last year. I got the replacement from Eurospares, it's an Audi part I think.

If you look really closely at the red light, you'll see two square blocks on either side that pop out when teased with a tiny screwdriver. Underneath these are two Torx screws. Remove, slide out light, slide in new one, tighten, replace little red blocks.

I was quoted about £2.4 gazzillion from the main dealer to do this, but did it myself in less than five minutes.

Just be very careful when removing the little cover blocks as they probably won't come with the replacement unit so you have to reuse them.

p.s. BRAKE light. wink

If I'd know that, I would have removed it with a sledgehammer. hehe
