I have been told that the standard catalytic convertor is prone to breaking up which can subsequently cause an expensive engine failure.

I've had a scan around the forum and can see no stories relating to this. Can anyone confirm please?

Also, if you do replace, what happens come the MOT? Do you have to get the spanners out and swap back?

Driving without cats on the road if vehicle is made after 1992, is illegal, and may affect your insurance.
If a cat is broken inside, it would likely trigger a sensor to flag a CEL or could fail your MOT emissions test.

Best to go for sports cats.

Hi banner, yeah, heard this or read it somewhere too, not sure it's anything but a myth though... Try to do a search on Google and not much comes up, certainly not something that's talked about here... certainly not something I worried about when I bought and not something that's featured in any buyers guide I've read, if it was a common problem, it would be on lamboweb or lamborghinitalk, and I'd have heard of it when buying myself..... generally, 07 year cars onwards were well sorted..... these cars were improved year on year regards reliability

Call lambo London service centre and ask Barry ebbs and also ask backdraft motorsport if its something they've heard of.. if you are really worried

Yes, law says if it should have had cats from factory, cats needed to pass mot, irrespective of emissions test results etc...

pre-LP and LP cars are different. The pre-LPs have the cats after the headers and are hence easier to replace. The LP cars have the headers as part of the headers and thus require an engine-out job to replace (if you can replace just the cats....).

Hi Dang

This is a pre LP car I'm asking about.

The question is not wether it's possible to change but one of, is it necessary. I was told that the cat is prone to breaking up, causing catastrophic engine damage! I think 70proof confirmed my thoughts.

On a separate note, does anyone know how to improve the 'jerky' getaway when cold. E-gear car.

Over the years have we seen Gallardo's with the cats breaking down? Yes

Do they all suffer with it? Certainly not

Is it necessary to replace the factory cats on all cars? No,

If you have any concerns about the health of your cats, then have your mechanics remove and inspect them, if you have a problem, your most cost effective route to repair this would be to go with a set of sports cats from Larini, they will pass the MOT and cost less than a single unit from Lamborghini

If you fit the test pipes you will need either a friendly MOT tester, or to swap back to a set of working cats come MOT time,

cats failing can lead to a rotten egg smell apparently, though this may be a late sign....

banner, what car are you looking at to buy?

my my08 pre lp car was not jerky pulling away from cold...... its now 9 years old, and over 32k miles, and still on first clutch (I'm still in touch with new owner).... when pulling away you should 'go for it' ie car is not one for slowly crawling along in traffic, allow gap to build and move with intent, not feather the throttle and let the clutch slip.

maybe the oils need changing, gearbox and diff oils are part of the 4th service in the cycle...

Thanks guys.

I already have the car. I will speak to the garage when it goes for next service. Just need to decide who that might be now!

Just wanted to update this thread - thanks for all the replies. Especially 70proof for the recommendation of Backdraft Motorsport. Excellent service from them and Mark totally allayed any concerns that I had.
